Spain produced a commanding performance to defeat Austria 3-0 in the FIFA World Cup Round of 32, securing their place in the last 16 with a dominant display. The victory also marked Spain’s first World Cup knockout win since lifting the trophy in 2010.
The European champions controlled proceedings from the opening whistle and created several opportunities before finally breaking the deadlock in the 36th minute. After Austria goalkeeper Alexander Schlager had already denied Mikel Oyarzabal moments earlier, the Spanish forward found the breakthrough by converting Marc Cucurella’s low cross from close range.
Spain continued to pile on the pressure before halftime. Álex Baena came close to doubling the advantage when his powerful free-kick struck the woodwork, while Lamine Yamal was denied by an outstanding save from Schlager to keep Austria within touching distance heading into the break.
Austria nearly equalised early in the second half when substitute Sasa Kalajdzic headed over the crossbar from close range shortly after coming on. The missed opportunity proved costly as Spain quickly tightened their grip on the contest.
The second goal arrived in the 66th minute, with Pedro Porro heading home from Baena’s cross after another well-worked Spanish attack. The goal effectively ended Austria’s hopes of mounting a comeback as Spain continued to dominate possession and create chances.
Although Yamal was later denied a goal by a goal-line clearance from David Alaba, Spain added a deserved third just before full-time. Oyarzabal completed his brace in the 89th minute, calmly finishing into the bottom corner after being picked out by another precise pass from Cucurella.
Spain completely outclassed Austria throughout the match, registering 23 shots, including 10 on target, compared to Austria’s five attempts, none of which tested the Spanish goalkeeper. The statistics reflected Spain’s attacking dominance and control of the game.
With the convincing victory, Spain advance to the Round of 16, where they will face Portugal.
