July 3: India is steadily emerging as a reliable global supplier of green fuels, particularly green hydrogen and green ammonia, as the country’s clean energy sector moves towards commercial maturity, Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) Secretary Santosh Kumar Sarangi has said.
Speaking on India’s growing role in the global energy transition, Sarangi noted that the country is well-positioned to become an important partner in international green hydrogen and green ammonia value chains. He said India’s expanding renewable energy capacity, supportive policy framework and competitive production costs are helping establish the country as a dependable supplier of clean fuels for global markets.
According to Sarangi, India’s green hydrogen ecosystem is progressing from the policy and pilot stage towards commercial-scale deployment. This transition is expected to strengthen the country’s contribution to global decarbonisation efforts while enhancing energy security for countries seeking low-carbon fuel alternatives.
Green hydrogen and green ammonia are considered key pillars of the global clean energy transition, with applications across industries such as steel, fertilisers, chemicals, shipping and heavy transport. As demand for these fuels increases worldwide, India aims to leverage its abundant renewable energy resources to become a competitive production and export hub.
The government’s push is supported by initiatives under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, which seeks to position India as a global centre for the production, utilisation and export of green hydrogen and its derivatives. The mission is also expected to attract investments, boost domestic manufacturing and create new employment opportunities across the renewable energy value chain.
Sarangi’s remarks come as India continues to expand its renewable energy capacity while strengthening international partnerships in clean energy. Long-term supply agreements for green ammonia and other green fuels are expected to enhance India’s role in global energy markets and contribute to international efforts to reduce carbon emissions.
With increasing investments in renewable power, electrolyser manufacturing and green fuel infrastructure, India is positioning itself as a trusted supplier capable of supporting the world’s transition towards sustainable and low-carbon energy systems.
