June 28: Lionel Messi added another milestone to his legendary career as Argentina defeated Jordan 3-1 to finish the FIFA World Cup 2026 group stage with a perfect record and secure top spot in Group J.
Coming on as a second-half substitute, Messi scored from a stunning free-kick to become the first player in FIFA World Cup history to score in seven consecutive World Cup appearances. The goal also extended his all-time World Cup scoring record to 19 goals.
Argentina completed the group stage with three wins from three matches, collecting nine points and joining France and Mexico as the only teams to finish the first round with a perfect record. Lionel Scaloni’s side outscored its opponents 8-1 during the group phase.
Giovani Lo Celso opened the scoring in the 19th minute with a beautifully curled free-kick before Lautaro Martínez doubled the lead from the penalty spot after Julián Álvarez was fouled inside the box.
Jordan pulled one back in the 55th minute through Mousa Al-Tamari, ending Argentina’s run without conceding a goal in the tournament.
Messi entered the match in the 60th minute and sealed the victory with a trademark free-kick in the 80th minute, curling his effort through the defensive wall to put the result beyond doubt. The 39-year-old nearly added another goal in stoppage time with another dangerous set-piece effort.
With the victory, Argentina advances to the Round of 32, where it will face Cape Verde on July 4. Jordan’s World Cup campaign ended without a point after three group-stage defeats.
Argentina’s commanding performances, coupled with Messi’s record-breaking form, reinforce its status as one of the favourites to challenge for the FIFA World Cup 2026 title.
