New Delhi, June 28: India and Japan are set to deepen cooperation on economic security, resilient supply chains, semiconductors, and clean energy as Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi visits New Delhi from July 1 to 3 for the 16th India-Japan Annual Summit.
Prime Minister Takaichi will hold bilateral talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on July 2, marking her first official visit to India since assuming office. The leaders are expected to review the progress of the India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership while discussing key regional and global developments.
A major outcome of the summit is expected to be a joint declaration on economic security, reinforcing both countries’ commitment to building resilient and trusted supply chains amid increasing geopolitical uncertainties. The proposed framework aims to strengthen bilateral consultations and coordination during supply chain disruptions and emergencies.
The two sides are also expected to expand cooperation in strategically important sectors, including semiconductors, critical minerals, rare earth elements, medical goods, and clean energy technologies, with a focus on reducing dependence on vulnerable global supply chains.
Clean energy is expected to feature prominently during the summit, with India and Japan likely to establish a new framework for promoting biogas-powered mobility. The initiative aligns with India’s efforts to enhance energy security, reduce crude oil imports, and accelerate the adoption of cleaner transportation solutions.
Japanese automaker Suzuki Motor has already initiated biogas production projects in India, providing momentum to the proposed collaboration.
The summit follows Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Tokyo for the 15th India-Japan Annual Summit in August 2025 and reflects the growing strategic convergence between the two countries in areas critical to future economic growth and technological resilience.
Officials believe the expanded partnership will strengthen bilateral cooperation across emerging technologies, clean energy, and critical manufacturing while supporting both nations’ long-term economic and energy security objectives.
