June 26: Sweden kept its FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign alive after battling to a 1-1 draw against Japan in their final Group F match, securing a place in the Round of 32 as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams.
Japan took the lead in the 56th minute through Daizen Maeda, who finished off a well-worked team move after a flowing attacking build-up. The goal put the Asian side on course for another group-stage victory and confirmed their attacking quality throughout the tournament.
Sweden, however, responded quickly as Anthony Elanga produced a moment of brilliance just six minutes later. The winger curled a left-footed effort into the net from the edge of the penalty area to level the score and keep Sweden’s qualification hopes firmly alive.
The draw proved enough for both teams to progress. Japan finished second in Group F with five points, setting up a Round of 32 clash with five-time world champions Brazil, while Sweden claimed one of the tournament’s eight knockout spots reserved for the best third-placed teams after finishing with four points.
The opening half offered few clear opportunities before Japan came close through Keito Nakamura, whose first-time effort forced an impressive save from Swedish goalkeeper Jacob Widell Zetterström.
Japan increased the tempo after the break and deservedly broke the deadlock with Maeda’s clinical finish following an intricate passing move initiated by Ritsu Doan and Ayase Ueda.
Sweden’s equaliser shifted the momentum, with Elanga’s curling strike breathing new life into the contest. The Scandinavian side pushed for a winner in the closing stages, but Japan goalkeeper Zion Suzuki produced two outstanding saves to deny Alexander Isak, including a stoppage-time header that struck the crossbar.
Despite settling for a draw, both teams achieved their objective of progressing to the knockout stage, where tougher challenges now await as the FIFA World Cup 2026 enters its elimination rounds.
