South Korean memory-chip giant SK Hynix is considering building a major semiconductor manufacturing plant in Miyagi prefecture, Japan, as surging demand for memory chips pushes the company to expand its production capacity.
According to a report by Hankyoreh, the project could involve an investment worth tens of trillions of South Korean won. The proposed facility would be located in northeastern Japan, an area that has been designated as one of the country’s key semiconductor industry hubs.
First Major South Korean Chip Investment in Japan?
If the project goes ahead, it could become the first large-scale semiconductor manufacturing investment in Japan by a South Korean chipmaker.
The potential investment comes at a time when demand for memory chips is increasing rapidly, driven in large part by the expansion of artificial intelligence data centres, advanced computing and high-performance servers.
SK Hynix is one of the world’s leading suppliers of memory products, including high-bandwidth memory (HBM), which has become particularly important for AI accelerators.
SK Group Chairman Visits Miyagi
The report said SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won recently visited the Miyagi region, adding to speculation that the company is seriously evaluating the location.
Japan has been aggressively trying to rebuild and expand its semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem, offering infrastructure and policy support to attract major chipmakers.
For SK Hynix, establishing production in Japan could also provide greater geographical diversification of its manufacturing footprint.
No Final Decision Yet
SK Hynix has not confirmed that the plant will be built.
Responding to the report, the company said no decision had been made, while noting that any location with the necessary infrastructure could potentially be considered.
If approved, however, the project would represent a major deepening of semiconductor cooperation between South Korea and Japan — and another sign of how the global AI boom is pushing chipmakers to invest heavily in new manufacturing capacity.
