June 29: Paraguay produced one of the biggest upsets of the FIFA World Cup 2026 by defeating four-time champions Germany 4-3 on penalties after a hard-fought 1-1 draw in their Round of 32 clash, securing a historic place in the Round of 16.
Germany entered the knockout fixture full of confidence after topping Group E with a dramatic stoppage-time victory over Ivory Coast. Making their first World Cup knockout appearance since lifting the trophy in 2014, the Germans started with leading scorer Deniz Undav in the lineup, while defender Nathaniel Brown returned after recovering from a minor muscle injury.
Paraguay, meanwhile, arrived as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams after recovering from a heavy opening defeat to the United States with a memorable victory over Turkey and a goalless draw against Australia. The South Americans were boosted by the return of Miguel Almiron following suspension, although defender Omar Alderete missed the match through injury.
The knockout contest proved to be an evenly matched affair, with both sides creating opportunities but unable to gain a decisive advantage. After finishing 1-1 following regulation and extra time, the tie was ultimately decided from the penalty spot.
Paraguay held their composure during the shootout, converting four of their spot-kicks, while Germany managed only three. The South Americans emerged 4-3 winners on penalties, completing a memorable upset and eliminating one of the tournament favourites.
The result sends Paraguay into the FIFA World Cup Round of 16, while Germany’s campaign comes to a disappointing end despite topping their group. The victory also marks one of Paraguay’s most significant achievements on the World Cup stage as they continue their remarkable run in the expanded 48-team tournament.
