July 1: France booked their place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16 with a commanding 3-0 victory over Sweden at the New York New Jersey Stadium, as captain Kylian Mbappé delivered another masterclass by scoring twice and rewriting the tournament’s record books.
Mbappé opened the scoring before combining brilliantly with teammate Michael Olise later in the match to complete his brace. Bradley Barcola also found the net in the second half as France controlled proceedings from start to finish, leaving Sweden with little opportunity to stage a comeback.
The French captain’s performance saw him become the highest scorer in FIFA World Cup knockout-stage history, surpassing the previous record with 10 knockout goals. Mbappé also moved within one goal of Lionel Messi’s all-time World Cup scoring record of 19 goals, while drawing level with the Argentine legend on six goals in the race for the 2026 Golden Boot.
Despite conceding three goals, Swedish goalkeeper Jacob Zetterström prevented an even heavier defeat with an outstanding display, making nine crucial saves throughout the contest. France created several additional scoring opportunities, but the goalkeeper’s heroics kept the final scoreline respectable.
France’s attacking combination of Mbappé, Barcola and Olise consistently troubled the Swedish defence, with Olise providing assists for both Barcola’s goal and Mbappé’s second strike. Les Bleus looked comfortable in possession and maintained complete control of the match, underlining their credentials as one of the tournament favourites.
With the victory, France advances to the Round of 16, where it will face Paraguay on July 4. Having produced another dominant performance and with Mbappé continuing his record-breaking form, Didier Deschamps’ side will head into the knockout stages with growing confidence as they continue their pursuit of another FIFA World Cup title.
