India produced a commanding performance in the first Test against Sri Lanka, defeating the hosts by 165 runs in Galle on Wednesday to take a 1-0 lead in the two-match series. The victory was powered by a sensational performance from left-arm spinner Manav Suthar, who claimed 10 wickets in the match.
Suthar finished with 4 wickets in Sri Lanka’s first innings and 6/55 in the second, ending the match with figures of 10/101. His second-innings spell dismantled Sri Lanka’s lower order and ensured India completed the victory before heavy rain arrived shortly after the match ended.
The result was particularly significant for India as it came in the team’s 600th Test match. The win also gives captain Shubman Gill’s side an important advantage heading into the second Test.
Padikkal’s Century Sets Up India’s Strong First Innings
India’s victory was built on a commanding first-innings batting performance.
After winning the toss and choosing to bat, India posted 462/9 declared, with Devdutt Padikkal producing the standout performance. The left-hander scored a brilliant 167, registering his maiden Test century and putting India in a strong position.
Padikkal’s innings provided the foundation for India’s imposing total, while KL Rahul and other members of the batting order also made valuable contributions.
Sri Lanka’s bowlers managed to fight back during the innings, particularly through their spinners, but India’s batting depth allowed the visitors to establish a significant advantage.
Suthar Makes His Impact
Sri Lanka responded with 284 in their first innings, leaving India with a substantial lead.
Manav Suthar played a key role with the ball, picking up four wickets and giving India control over Sri Lanka’s batting lineup.
Despite resistance from the hosts, particularly through their middle order, Sri Lanka were unable to match India’s first-innings total.
India therefore entered their second innings with a valuable lead and an opportunity to set Sri Lanka an imposing fourth-innings target.
India Stumble in Second Innings
India’s batting was less convincing in their second innings.
The visitors were dismissed for 193, giving Sri Lanka a target of 372 runs to win the Test.
Although the lower total gave Sri Lanka a theoretical chance of chasing the target, the pressure of the fourth innings at Galle and India’s quality spin attack made the task extremely difficult.
Sri Lanka’s chase eventually proved beyond their reach.
Sri Lanka Show Resistance
Sri Lanka began their fourth-innings chase with some resistance, particularly through Dhananjaya de Silva and Sonal Dinusha.
The pair put together a substantial partnership that briefly raised hopes of a competitive chase. Dhananjaya scored 59, while Dinusha produced the highest score for Sri Lanka with 84.
However, India’s bowlers eventually broke through.
Ravindra Jadeja dismissed Dhananjaya, ending the important partnership and exposing Sri Lanka’s lower order. Prasidh Krishna then contributed with another important wicket as India tightened their grip on the match.
Suthar Finishes the Job
With Sri Lanka’s resistance beginning to collapse, Suthar took centre stage.
The young left-arm spinner produced a decisive spell on the final day, claiming 6/55 and tearing through Sri Lanka’s remaining batting lineup. He took three wickets in the 76th over before dismissing the final batter in the 78th over.
Sri Lanka were eventually bowled out for 206, handing India a 165-run victory.
Suthar’s 10-wicket match haul made him the defining figure of India’s win and established him as one of the major talking points from the Test.
Gill Praises Suthar’s Potential
India captain Shubman Gill praised Suthar after the match, describing the young spinner as a promising long-term prospect for Indian cricket.
Suthar, who is only in the early stages of his international career, showed impressive control and consistency throughout the match. His ability to deliver a major performance in spin-friendly conditions could strengthen India’s options in the longer format.
Devdutt Padikkal was also recognised for his contribution and was named Player of the Match after his 167-run first-innings effort.
India Take 1-0 Series Lead
The victory gives India a 1-0 lead in the two-match series and provides the team with significant momentum going into the next Test.
Sri Lanka, meanwhile, face further selection concerns ahead of the second match. Kusal Mendis and Dinesh Chandimal are set to miss the second Test, adding to the hosts’ challenges after their defeat in Galle.
For India, the biggest positive will be the emergence of Suthar alongside the strong batting performance from Padikkal.
The visitors will now look to build on their Galle victory and complete a series win in the second Test.
