NTPC Green Energy Ltd (NGEL) has strengthened its position in India’s renewable energy market after its wholly owned subsidiary NTPC Renewable Energy Ltd (NTPC REL) secured 500 MW of contracted capacity in the Solar Energy Corporation of India’s (SECI) 6,000 MWh assured peak power tender at a discovered tariff of ₹6 per kWh.
The e-reverse auction for the tender was concluded on August 21, 2026, with NTPC REL emerging as one of the successful bidders under the SECI-FDRE-IX tender.
The tender seeks renewable energy developers capable of supplying 6,000 MWh of assured peak power, comprising 1,500 MW for four hours, from interstate transmission system (ISTS)-connected renewable energy projects across India.
NTPC REL Secures 500 MW Capacity
Under the competitive bidding process, NTPC REL secured 500 MW of contracted capacity, adding to NTPC Green Energy’s growing renewable energy portfolio.
The assured peak power structure is particularly significant for India’s power transition as it addresses one of the key challenges associated with renewable energy — the variability of solar and wind generation.
Unlike conventional solar generation, peak-power tenders require developers to ensure electricity availability during specified high-demand periods, potentially supported by energy storage and other balancing solutions.
Strong Growth in Quarterly Financial Performance
The tender win comes shortly after NTPC Green Energy reported strong financial results for the quarter ended June 2026.
The company’s net profit increased 38.3% year-on-year, supported by a substantial rise in revenue.
Revenue from operations climbed 62.7% to ₹1,106.9 crore, compared with ₹680.2 crore in the corresponding quarter of the previous year.
EBITDA also increased sharply, rising 63.8% to ₹988.7 crore during the quarter. The company maintained a strong EBITDA margin of 89.3%, compared with 88.7% a year earlier.
The financial performance highlights the rapid expansion of the company’s renewable energy operations as India continues to increase its clean-energy capacity.
New Renewable Energy SPV Planned
Separately, the NTPC Green Energy board approved the incorporation of a wholly owned subsidiary or special purpose vehicle (SPV) for developing renewable energy projects.
The proposed structure is expected to facilitate subsequent stake dilution for captive and group-captive projects serving commercial and industrial customers, subject to regulatory and other necessary approvals.
The move could allow NGEL to expand its participation in the rapidly growing commercial and industrial renewable energy market, where businesses are increasingly seeking long-term access to clean electricity.
NGEL to Increase Stake in Andhra Pradesh JV
The company has also received in-principle approval to invest up to ₹28.78 lakh in AP NGEL Harit Amrit Ltd, a 50:50 joint venture between NTPC Green Energy and the New & Renewable Energy Development Corporation of Andhra Pradesh Ltd.
Following the proposed investment, NTPC Green Energy’s holding in the joint venture is expected to increase to 51%.
Once the required statutory and regulatory approvals are obtained, AP NGEL Harit Amrit will become a subsidiary of NTPC Green Energy.
The investment further expands NGEL’s presence in Andhra Pradesh and supports its strategy of developing renewable energy assets through dedicated project entities.
Renewable Energy Expansion Continues
The latest SECI tender win comes as NTPC Green Energy continues to build its portfolio across solar, wind, energy storage and other clean-energy projects.
The shift towards assured renewable power is becoming increasingly important as India integrates larger quantities of intermittent renewable generation into its electricity grid. Projects capable of supplying power during peak-demand periods can help bridge the gap between renewable generation patterns and consumer demand.
For NTPC Green Energy, the 500 MW award therefore represents more than additional renewable capacity — it strengthens the company’s position in India’s emerging firm and dispatchable renewable energy market.
NTPC Green Energy Share Price
Shares of NTPC Green Energy closed at ₹91.55 on the BSE on August 21, declining ₹0.30, or 0.33%, from the previous session.
With the latest SECI award, strong quarterly financial performance and continued expansion through subsidiaries and joint ventures, the company remains focused on scaling its renewable energy portfolio as India accelerates its transition towards cleaner power generation.
