Shimla, 23 June: In a step towards strengthening environmental conservation and expanding green cover, the Himachal Pradesh Forest Department has signed Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) agreements with two hospitality companies in Kullu under the State’s Rajiv Gandhi Green Adoption Scheme.
The Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) were signed with Red Apple and Paradise Chateau, under which both firms will support plantation and maintenance activities on one hectare of forest land each over the next five years through CSR funding.
Launched by the Himachal Pradesh government, the Rajiv Gandhi Green Adoption Scheme aims to promote ecological restoration, increase forest cover, and encourage greater participation from private institutions and communities in environmental protection efforts.
The initiative was highlighted in the State Budget as a new CSR-driven programme focused on afforestation of barren lands, biodiversity conservation, and the creation of livelihood opportunities for local communities.
Speaking on the occasion, Sanjay Sood, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (HoFF) and Chief Project Director, JICA Forestry Project, said eligible organizations can adopt forest areas identified by the department for plantation, eco-restoration, and maintenance activities based on approved technical guidelines.
He noted that the scheme is designed to facilitate responsible CSR investments while ensuring scientific planning, continuous monitoring, and long-term sustainability of plantation projects. The ownership and management of the adopted forest land will remain with the State Government, with all activities carried out under the supervision of the Forest Department.
The programme is expected to contribute to biodiversity conservation, climate resilience, soil and water conservation, and sustainable livelihood generation, while creating a collaborative model for private sector participation in environmental stewardship.
