New Delhi, 18June: The Centre has begun the process of appointing new leaders for two key public sector companies at the forefront of India’s clean energy transition—SJVN Ltd and NTPC Green Energy Ltd (NGEL). The Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB), the government’s top executive search body, has invited applications for the positions of Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of SJVN and Managing Director of NTPC Green Energy.
The move comes as both companies play increasingly important roles in supporting India’s renewable energy ambitions. Significantly, senior executives from the private sector have also been made eligible to apply for the positions, broadening the pool of potential candidates. According to the eligibility criteria, applicants from private companies with annual revenues of at least ₹5,000 crore can apply, with preference likely to be given to candidates from listed firms.
PESB issued the advertisement for the SJVN CMD position on June 13. The post is currently being held on an additional-charge basis by NHPC Chairman and Managing Director Bhupinder Gupta. SJVN, a Navratna public sector enterprise, has evolved from a hydroelectric power producer into a diversified energy company with interests spanning hydropower, solar, wind, thermal generation, transmission, and power trading. The company operates projects across India and Nepal.
SJVN currently has a project portfolio of more than 21 GW spread across 53 projects, along with transmission infrastructure exceeding 390 kilometres. Over 4 GW of generation capacity is operational, while another 4.1 GW is under construction, reflecting the company’s growing role in the country’s renewable and conventional power sectors.
Meanwhile, PESB has also opened applications for the post of Managing Director at NTPC Green Energy Ltd, the renewable energy arm of NTPC. The position has remained vacant since February 2026. NGEL has emerged as one of India’s fastest-growing renewable energy developers, with an operational capacity of approximately 9.2 GW as of March 2026 and nearly 14 GW under construction.
The company’s portfolio includes around 8.4 GW of solar power and 0.8 GW of wind energy projects. During FY26, NGEL commissioned about 3.3 GW of renewable energy capacity, underlining its strong project execution capabilities.
NGEL is also spearheading several large-scale renewable energy parks, including the flagship Khavda Ultra Mega Renewable Energy Power Park in Gujarat and the Barethi Solar Park in Madhya Pradesh. These projects are expected to contribute significantly to India’s target of expanding non-fossil fuel-based power generation capacity.
The appointments are being closely watched by the power and renewable energy sectors, as both SJVN and NTPC Green Energy are expected to play critical roles in accelerating India’s clean energy deployment and achieving the country’s long-term decarbonisation goals.
