Uttar Pradesh is emerging as one of India’s leading states in rooftop solar adoption, with 17 districts securing places among the country’s top 100 districts for rooftop solar installations under the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana.
The achievement highlights the growing adoption of clean energy among households across the state and reflects efforts to simplify the installation and subsidy process for consumers.
Lucknow Retains No. 1 Position
Lucknow has continued to lead the country in rooftop solar installations, with 1,24,167 rooftop solar systems installed under the scheme.
The state capital’s performance has been supported by simplified application procedures, faster approvals, coordination between electricity distribution companies and implementing agencies, and timely subsidy disbursement.
The large-scale adoption has also helped demonstrate how rooftop solar can become an accessible source of clean energy for urban households.
Varanasi and Kanpur Also Among National Leaders
Varanasi has secured 10th position nationally, with 48,829 rooftop solar installations.
Kanpur Nagar has achieved 14th position, with 43,289 installations, highlighting the growing adoption of rooftop solar in one of Uttar Pradesh’s major industrial centres.
The success is not limited to these three districts.

The PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana provides financial assistance to households installing rooftop solar systems.
The Uttar Pradesh government has supported implementation through the Uttar Pradesh New and Renewable Energy Development Agency (UPNEDA), with an emphasis on simplifying the process from application and approval to installation and subsidy disbursement.
Online applications, streamlined inspections and improved coordination with power distribution companies have helped reduce delays for consumers.
Households Becoming ‘Prosumers’
Rooftop solar is also changing the role of electricity consumers.
Through net metering, households can send surplus electricity generated by their solar systems back to the electricity grid and receive credits according to applicable regulations.
