Microsoft is reportedly preparing to unveil its next-generation Maia 300 artificial intelligence chip as early as September, as the company accelerates efforts to develop its own AI hardware and reduce dependence on Nvidia’s expensive processors.
According to The Information, the chip could represent a major step forward in Microsoft’s custom silicon strategy as demand for AI computing capacity continues to surge.
Microsoft Expands Custom AI Chip Strategy
Microsoft introduced its first Maia AI chip in November 2023, beginning an effort to develop in-house processors for its Azure cloud infrastructure.
However, the company has moved more slowly in scaling its custom chips compared with rivals such as Google and Amazon, which have increasingly deployed their own AI processors.
Microsoft’s latest push comes as cloud providers seek greater control over AI infrastructure costs and supply chains amid enormous demand for computing power.
Maia 300 Could See Large-Scale Production
Microsoft has reportedly been discussing manufacturing capacity with TSMC for more than 300,000 Maia 300 chips for delivery in 2027.
The company is also looking to substantially increase production and encourage major cloud customers, including AI company Anthropic, to adopt the processors.
Microsoft ultimately aims to secure manufacturing capacity for more than 1 million Maia 300 chips, although component availability and negotiations over TSMC’s production capacity could affect the scale and timing of the rollout.
Microsoft’s Azure Maia general manager Andrew Wall confirmed that the company continues to invest in custom silicon but said reported production figures did not reflect the full scale of its programme.
Competition With Nvidia Intensifies
Nvidia currently dominates the market for AI accelerators used to train and run advanced AI models.
Microsoft’s development of Maia chips is part of a broader effort by major cloud companies to reduce reliance on Nvidia and develop alternatives tailored specifically to their own data-centre workloads.
Google has already begun recognising revenue from direct sales of its custom Tensor Processing Units (TPUs), while Amazon has expanded adoption of its own Trainium AI processors.
Maia 200 Already Introduced
Microsoft unveiled its second-generation Maia 200 in January.
The processor was manufactured by TSMC using a 3-nanometre process and was designed specifically for AI workloads.
Microsoft equipped Maia 200 with a large amount of SRAM, a type of high-speed memory that can provide performance advantages when AI systems have to handle large numbers of simultaneous requests.
The reported Maia 300 represents the company’s next step toward building a much larger custom AI computing ecosystem.
