Uttar Pradesh has unveiled an ambitious roadmap to transform its energy sector by significantly expanding renewable energy generation, with a target of developing 22,000 MW of solar power while accelerating investments in bioenergy and green hydrogen. The initiative is aimed at strengthening energy security, reducing dependence on fossil fuels, creating employment opportunities and supporting sustainable economic growth across the state.
The state government’s green energy strategy is expected to play a key role in meeting rising electricity demand while contributing to India’s national clean energy and climate goals.
22 GW Solar Capacity Target
As part of its renewable energy roadmap, Uttar Pradesh plans to develop 22,000 MW of solar power capacity through utility-scale projects, rooftop solar installations and agricultural solar initiatives.
The expansion is expected to improve electricity availability, reduce dependence on conventional power sources and increase the share of renewable energy in the state’s overall energy mix.
Focus on Bioenergy and Green Hydrogen
Alongside solar energy, the state is placing significant emphasis on bioenergy and green hydrogen, two sectors viewed as critical for India’s long-term energy transition.
Bioenergy projects are expected to utilise agricultural residues, organic waste and biomass to generate clean electricity, helping reduce stubble burning while creating additional income opportunities for farmers.
The government is also encouraging investments in green hydrogen, produced using renewable electricity, which is expected to support decarbonisation in industries such as fertilisers, refining, transport and heavy manufacturing.
Benefits for Farmers and Rural Economy
Officials believe the renewable energy expansion will create new income opportunities for farmers through solar projects, biomass supply chains and clean energy infrastructure.
Agricultural waste that was previously discarded or burnt can be converted into a valuable resource for bioenergy production, providing an additional source of rural income while improving environmental sustainability.
Employment and Industrial Growth
The large-scale renewable energy programme is expected to generate employment across multiple sectors, including manufacturing, engineering, project development, construction, operations and maintenance.
The push is also likely to attract private investment into renewable energy manufacturing, equipment production and green technology industries, strengthening Uttar Pradesh’s industrial ecosystem.
