TP Renewable Microgrid Limited (TPRMG), a wholly owned subsidiary of Tata Power, is expanding its decentralised renewable energy solutions to help rural communities across India achieve greater energy security, improve productivity and build sustainable livelihoods.
Through its integrated portfolio of solar-powered microgrids, solar irrigation systems, energy-efficient appliances, productive-use equipment and emerging bioenergy solutions, TPRMG aims to provide reliable and cleaner electricity to households, farmers and village-level enterprises.
Microgrids Supporting Rural Energy Independence
TPRMG’s decentralised energy model is designed to address the specific energy requirements of rural communities while reducing dependence on diesel and other fossil fuels.
The company’s solutions combine renewable power generation with productive-use applications, enabling electricity to support agriculture, dairy businesses, shops and other village enterprises.
Sunehri Chowraha in Bahraich district of Uttar Pradesh has emerged as one example of this integrated rural energy model.
By providing reliable renewable electricity locally, microgrids can help rural businesses operate for longer hours and adopt modern electrical equipment that improves productivity, product quality and customer service.
Reducing Diesel Dependence for Rural Businesses
TPRMG’s microgrids are helping rural enterprises transition away from diesel-powered machinery.
The company said businesses switching from diesel-operated machines to microgrid-powered electrical equipment can potentially achieve operating cost savings of around 20–30%, while also reducing carbon emissions, air pollution and noise.
Reliable renewable electricity can also enable businesses to invest in more efficient equipment and expand their operations without depending heavily on diesel generators.
Solar Power Supporting Agriculture and Dairy
Agriculture is another key area of TPRMG’s rural energy strategy.
Its solar-powered irrigation systems provide farmers with an alternative to diesel pumps, helping reduce irrigation costs while improving access to reliable water for agricultural activities.
The company is also supporting rural dairy enterprises through energy-efficient equipment such as bulk milk coolers and milk-processing systems.
These solutions can help preserve milk quality, reduce energy consumption and strengthen the rural dairy value chain.
TPRMG’s decentralised energy ecosystem can support several village-level applications, including:
- Milk collection and cooling
- Milk processing
- Jaggery production
- Spice processing
- Oil expellers
- Flour mills
- Other small rural enterprises
Focus on Energy-Efficient Equipment
The electricity generated through microgrids is also being used to encourage the adoption of energy-efficient technologies.
These include BLDC fans, IE3 and IE4 motors, LED lighting, efficient refrigeration systems, pumps and livelihood appliances.
Such technologies can reduce electricity consumption while improving operational efficiency and productivity for rural consumers.
For eligible customers, TPRMG also facilitates access to financing and EMI options for selected energy-efficient equipment, subject to eligibility, documentation and approval by financing partners.
More Than 18,000 Customers Supported
TPRMG said its clean-energy interventions have supported more than 18,000 customers and rural enterprises in Uttar Pradesh.
The company’s operations have also generated direct and indirect employment opportunities across the rural clean-energy value chain.
Its decentralised solar and bioenergy approach also supports the circular economy by exploring the conversion of agricultural residues and organic waste into useful energy where technically and commercially feasible.
This can create additional value for farmers and local entrepreneurs while reducing dependence on conventional fuels.
4.5 MW Microgrid Portfolio in Uttar Pradesh
TPRMG currently has an installed microgrid portfolio of approximately 4.5 MW in Uttar Pradesh.
According to the company, its microgrids generate more than 5.74 million units of clean electricity annually.
The company estimates that these operations have helped avoid approximately:
- 2.36 million litres of diesel consumption annually
- 6,400 tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually
These reductions highlight the potential of decentralised renewable energy to address both rural energy access and environmental challenges.
Developing Rural Renewable Energy Skills
TPRMG has also launched the RE Tech Mitra initiative, a rural entrepreneurship and skill-development programme designed to train local youth in the installation, operation and maintenance of renewable-energy systems and energy-efficient equipment.
The programme aims to create local employment opportunities while ensuring that renewable energy assets have access to trained personnel for maintenance and operational support.
Developing local technical capabilities can also improve the long-term reliability and responsiveness of decentralised energy systems.
Clean Energy as an Engine of Rural Growth
Speaking on the initiative, Manoj Kumar Gupta, CEO, TP Renewable Microgrid, said energy independence goes beyond electricity access and involves enabling rural communities to become economically self-reliant.
The company’s approach combines solar energy, energy-efficient technologies, bioenergy and local entrepreneurship to create more resilient rural ecosystems.
Through this integrated model, TPRMG is seeking to position clean energy not only as a solution for reducing emissions, but also as an enabler of agricultural productivity, rural businesses, employment and inclusive economic growth.
