SpaceX has rescheduled the next launch attempt of its Starship rocket to Thursday, July 23, following a last-second launch abort during its previous test flight earlier this month. The company confirmed the revised schedule on Sunday as it continues preparations for the highly anticipated 13th flight test of the world’s most powerful rocket.
SpaceX Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk initially posted on social media platform X that the next Starship launch would take place on Friday. However, he later corrected the timeline, stating that the launch is expected on Thursday, matching the company’s official announcement.
The latest delay follows the unsuccessful launch attempt on July 16, when Starship’s countdown was halted moments before liftoff from the company’s Starbase facility in Texas due to an issue detected during final pre-launch checks. Although no explosion or damage occurred, the aborted mission temporarily impacted investor sentiment, with reports suggesting the incident erased nearly $100 billion from SpaceX’s estimated market valuation.
According to the company, engineers have since modified Starship’s propulsion system to address the engine-related issue identified during the previous launch attempt. The improvements are intended to enhance reliability before the rocket proceeds with another flight test.
Launch delays are not unusual for the approximately $15 billion Starship development programme, which has become known for its rapid engineering approach involving repeated testing, design modifications and iterative improvements. SpaceX has consistently emphasised that learning through frequent test flights remains central to developing a fully reusable launch system capable of supporting future deep-space missions.
Since 2023, the company has conducted 12 Starship test flights, with each mission contributing valuable engineering data despite several ending in controlled failures or in-flight explosions. The programme plays a critical role in SpaceX’s long-term plans to transport humans and cargo to the Moon, Mars and beyond while significantly reducing the cost of space transportation.
The upcoming 13th test flight will carry 20 Starlink satellites as part of a demonstration of Starship’s satellite deployment capabilities. Unlike operational missions, however, the satellites will not enter orbit. Instead, they will be released along the spacecraft’s suborbital trajectory before re-entering Earth’s atmosphere and burning up shortly after deployment.
The mission will also test the Starlink network’s laser communication links, an important capability designed to improve data transmission between satellites and strengthen SpaceX’s expanding global broadband network.
SpaceX has previously indicated that it intends to begin launching Starlink satellites into orbit using Starship before the end of the year, paving the way for routine operational missions once the rocket successfully completes its development and regulatory milestones.
Starship remains central to several major future programmes, including NASA’s Artemis missions, commercial satellite launches and SpaceX’s long-term ambition of establishing a human presence on Mars. Each successful test flight brings the company closer to certifying the world’s largest reusable rocket for regular space operations.
With propulsion system modifications completed and launch preparations underway, all eyes will now be on July 23, when SpaceX hopes to resume Starship’s flight testing and advance one of the most ambitious aerospace development programmes in history.
