India’s private space industry achieved a historic milestone as Skyroot Aerospace successfully launched Vikram-1, the country’s first privately developed orbital-class rocket, from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC-SHAR) in Sriharikota. The mission, named Mission Aagaman, marked India’s entry into an exclusive group of nations where private companies have independently designed, built and successfully launched orbital launch vehicles.
The launch was a complete success on its maiden attempt, with all four stages performing as planned and the rocket successfully deploying its payloads into the intended trajectory. Despite a brief delay caused by an internal launch hold, the mission proceeded smoothly, demonstrating the reliability of the rocket’s design and propulsion systems.
Standing nearly seven storeys tall, Vikram-1 is an advanced all-carbon composite, multi-stage launch vehicle capable of carrying payloads weighing up to 350 kilograms into Low Earth Orbit (LEO). The rocket incorporates propulsion technologies developed entirely in-house by Skyroot Aerospace, including 3D-printed rocket engines and high-performance solid rocket motors, highlighting the growing technological capabilities of India’s private aerospace sector.
The maiden flight carried several technology demonstration payloads from Grahaa Space, Cosmoserve, DCubed, and Skyroot’s own SCOPE experiment, aimed at validating new technologies in space. The mission also included symbolic payloads that reflected India’s collective journey in space exploration. Among them were Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s handwritten “Vande Mataram” postcard, handwritten messages from current and former ISRO Chairmen, Indian astronauts, Skyroot employees, investors and supporters from around the world.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the Skyroot team on the successful maiden launch, describing it as a landmark achievement for India’s space ambitions. Speaking to the company’s founders, the Prime Minister said, “Pawan and Bharat, you have not only planted a new tree in space, but also a new root has been strengthened on the ground to inspire the new generation,” acknowledging the mission’s significance in encouraging innovation and entrepreneurship in the country’s rapidly expanding space ecosystem.
Beyond successfully placing demonstration payloads into space, Mission Aagaman is expected to generate valuable engineering and flight performance data that will help Skyroot further refine the Vikram launch vehicle family. The company plans to use the insights from this mission to establish a regular commercial launch schedule for the growing global small satellite market.
The successful flight also represents a major milestone for India’s space sector reforms, which opened the country’s space ecosystem to private participation. The policy changes have enabled Indian startups to develop launch vehicles, satellites and other space technologies while working alongside the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), significantly expanding the nation’s commercial space capabilities.
Skyroot Aerospace was founded in 2018 by former ISRO scientists Pawan Kumar Chandana and Naga Bharath Daka, who envisioned making access to space more affordable, responsive and commercially viable. The company first made history in 2022 with the successful launch of Vikram-S, India’s first privately developed rocket to reach space. The successful orbital debut of Vikram-1 now marks the next major step in Skyroot’s journey toward becoming a commercial launch service provider for domestic and international customers.
Industry experts believe the achievement could strengthen India’s position in the rapidly growing global small satellite launch market, where demand for cost-effective and reliable launch services continues to rise.
