June 24: Hindustan Zinc has signed a memorandum of understanding with Advantek Associates LLP and Aero Eagle Automobiles Pvt Ltd to explore the use of green hydrogen and other clean-energy technologies across its mining operations as part of its broader decarbonisation strategy.
The collaboration is aimed at assessing innovative low-carbon solutions that can help reduce emissions in mining and industrial activities, while supporting the company’s long-term goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 or earlier.
As part of the agreement, Hindustan Zinc will evaluate the feasibility of deploying hydrogen-based technologies across its operations, including green hydrogen generation, storage systems, dispensing infrastructure, and hydrogen-powered equipment. The company will also assess the use of Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engine (H2-ICE) and fuel cell technologies in mining and related industrial applications.
A key focus of the partnership will be exploring the use of hydrogen fuel solutions in underground mining environments. If implemented, the initiative could make Hindustan Zinc one of the first companies in India’s mining sector to deploy hydrogen-powered technology for underground mining operations.
The move comes at a time when the mining and heavy industry sectors are increasingly under pressure to reduce carbon emissions, despite being among the most difficult industries to decarbonise due to their energy-intensive and hard-to-electrify nature. Green hydrogen is emerging as a promising clean fuel option for such sectors, particularly for high-capacity equipment and operations where direct electrification may not be practical.
The company said the MoU aligns with its strategy of building future-ready, technology-led, and sustainable mining operations. In addition to supporting its environmental goals, the initiative is also expected to help improve operational efficiency and create long-term sustainable value.
The partnership will now focus on detailed feasibility studies and technical evaluations to determine how hydrogen-based energy systems can be integrated into Hindustan Zinc’s mining ecosystem in the years ahead.
