June 24: Google has partnered with Energy Dome to develop a new long-duration energy storage project in Ireland, marking another step in its efforts to support clean energy infrastructure and round-the-clock renewable power availability.
The project will involve the construction of a 23MW / 200MWh long-duration energy storage plant at the site of a former thermal power station near Rhode in County Offaly. It is part of a broader long-term agreement between the two companies to deploy Energy Dome’s CO2 Battery technology at scale.
The initiative is aligned with Google’s global clean energy strategy, which focuses on expanding access to 24/7 carbon-free and affordable electricity. By supporting long-duration energy storage, the company aims to improve the reliability of renewable power and help electricity grids manage fluctuations in supply and demand more efficiently.
Energy Dome’s CO2 Battery technology is designed to store excess renewable energy during periods of oversupply and release it back into the grid when demand rises or renewable generation falls. This capability can help stabilize electricity systems, reduce dependence on fossil fuel-based backup power, and improve the overall efficiency of renewable energy use.
The upcoming plant in Ireland is expected to serve as a model for how long-duration energy storage can support the transition to cleaner and more resilient power systems. By combining storage with renewable energy resources, the project aims to demonstrate how grids can better handle intermittent power generation while maintaining affordability and reliability.
The partnership also reflects growing industry interest in large-scale storage technologies as countries and corporations seek solutions to support decarbonisation goals and strengthen energy security.
Once operational, the project could contribute to Ireland’s broader clean energy ambitions and provide a blueprint for similar long-duration storage deployments in other markets.
