Vedanta Group company Hindustan Zinc Ltd (HZL) is accelerating its shift towards clean energy, with renewable sources now accounting for 22% of its overall power consumption, up from around 18% in FY2025-26.
The company is targeting an even bigger transformation, aiming to meet approximately 70% of its total electricity requirements through renewable energy by FY2027-28.
Green Power Generation Jumps
Hindustan Zinc significantly increased its own green power generation during FY2025-26.
The company generated 892 million units of green electricity during the year, compared with 632 million units in FY2024-25.
The increase, combined with renewable power procurement, has helped raise the share of clean energy in the company’s overall power mix to 22%.
The company operates across Rajasthan and Uttarakhand, where it is continuing to expand its renewable power capabilities.
70% Renewable Target by FY28
To move closer to its 70% renewable-energy target, Hindustan Zinc has expanded its round-the-clock renewable power agreement with Serentica Renewables from 450 MW to 530 MW.
The round-the-clock arrangement is particularly important for an industrial company because it can provide more consistent renewable electricity instead of relying only on solar generation during daylight hours.
Hindustan Zinc is also upgrading its power connectivity from the state transmission network to the Central Transmission Utility, while working on additional projects aimed at improving energy efficiency.
Floating Solar and Waste Heat Recovery
The company’s energy transition strategy isn’t limited to purchasing renewable electricity.
Hindustan Zinc is also improving its waste heat recovery systems, including boiler steam turbine generation, to extract more useful energy from existing industrial processes.
Another initiative involves floating solar installations on water ponds, allowing renewable power generation without requiring large amounts of additional land.
Together, these measures are designed to reduce dependence on conventional power while improving the efficiency and resilience of the company’s operations.
Clean Energy Becomes a Business Strategy
Hindustan Zinc CEO Amarendu Prakash said the company’s increasing renewable power share demonstrates that clean energy is becoming more than simply a tool for reducing emissions.
The company views renewable energy as an important component of building a more resilient, competitive and responsible business.
If Hindustan Zinc reaches its 70% target by FY28, the company would have significantly transformed the electricity mix powering its operations in just a few years.
The move also reflects a broader trend among India’s energy-intensive industries, which are increasingly turning to renewable power, storage and energy-efficiency technologies to reduce both emissions and long-term energy risks.
