Google’s Gemini app has surpassed 1 billion monthly active users, marking a major milestone for the company’s artificial intelligence push and making Gemini one of Google’s fastest-growing products.
Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced the milestone on X, noting that Gemini has become the 14th Google product to cross the 1 billion-user mark.
The achievement puts Gemini on par with OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which crossed 1 billion monthly active users in June 2026, highlighting the rapidly expanding global adoption of AI assistants.
Gemini Becomes a Major Google Platform
Google has been integrating Gemini across its broader ecosystem, including:
- Google Search
- Google Workspace
- Android
- The standalone Gemini app
- AI-powered Search features
However, Google clarified that the 1 billion figure specifically refers to the Gemini app and does not include users accessing Gemini-powered AI features through other Google products.
Google’s AI Mode in Search separately has more than 1 billion monthly active users globally, demonstrating the scale of the company’s overall AI ecosystem.
Voice and Image Generation Drive Usage
Google also shared insights into how users interact with Gemini.
Around 63% of Gemini users use the assistant’s voice feature, indicating strong adoption of conversational AI rather than purely text-based interactions.
The platform is also being increasingly used for image generation. According to Google, Gemini now generates more than 150 million images every day.
The app’s growth is also extending beyond Google’s Android ecosystem, with more than 100 million active Gemini users on iOS.
New AI Models and Agent Capabilities
Google has continued expanding Gemini’s capabilities with new models and features.
The company recently introduced Gemini 3.5 Flash, designed to improve performance in areas such as coding and autonomous AI-agent tasks.
This reflects Google’s broader shift from traditional chatbot functionality towards AI systems capable of performing more complex tasks with greater levels of autonomy.
Gemini’s Rapid Growth
The latest milestone follows strong growth reported during Google’s Q2 2026 earnings period.
At that time, Google reported more than 950 million monthly Gemini users, while daily active users had tripled over the previous year.
Crossing the 1 billion monthly active-user mark shortly afterward demonstrates the speed at which Google’s AI products are gaining adoption.
Competition With ChatGPT Intensifies
Gemini’s growth also intensifies competition between Google and OpenAI.
With both Gemini and ChatGPT now reaching approximately 1 billion monthly active users, the competition is increasingly shifting beyond model performance towards ecosystem integration, AI agents, productivity tools, mobile platforms and developer adoption.
Google has a major advantage in its ability to integrate Gemini directly into Search, Android, Workspace and other widely used products, while OpenAI continues expanding ChatGPT as a standalone AI platform and broader productivity ecosystem.
The milestone comes ahead of Google’s Made by Google event, where the company is expected to unveil additional Gemini-powered features across its Pixel devices.
