In a significant step towards promoting clean energy and sustainable urban infrastructure, the Delhi government is set to install the city’s first Solar Tree at the Delhi Secretariat. The pilot project aims to generate maximum solar power while occupying minimal land, offering an innovative solution for renewable energy generation in densely populated urban areas.
The initiative is being implemented by the Delhi government’s Power Department in collaboration with various government agencies. The Solar Tree will first be installed within the Delhi Secretariat complex, which houses the offices of Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, cabinet ministers and senior government officials. The government intends to use the project as a demonstration model before expanding it to other parts of the capital.
Unlike conventional rooftop solar installations, a Solar Tree is designed to resemble a natural tree. It consists of a strong central metal pole with multiple branches that hold solar panels at different angles. This design allows the panels to capture sunlight more efficiently throughout the day while requiring significantly less ground space compared to traditional solar farms.
Officials believe the technology can play a crucial role in meeting Delhi’s growing clean energy requirements, particularly in areas where land availability is limited. If the pilot project proves successful, similar Solar Trees are expected to be installed at major road intersections, public parks, commercial hubs and other high-footfall locations across the city.
The electricity generated from these Solar Trees will be used to power various public utilities, including street lighting systems, electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, and other government infrastructure. The project aligns with Delhi’s broader objective of increasing renewable energy adoption while reducing dependence on conventional electricity sources.
By generating more electricity in a smaller footprint, Solar Trees offer an efficient solution for urban environments where rooftop installations or large solar parks may not always be feasible. The initiative is also expected to enhance public awareness about renewable energy technologies while supporting India’s transition towards a cleaner and more sustainable energy future.
