Nagpur, April 16: A major CSR initiative aimed at rejuvenating the Sawangi canal in Nagpur has significantly improved the region’s water security, benefiting around 200 families with access to drinking water and supporting nearly 400 hectares of agricultural land.

Launched in February 2024, the project involved the widening and deepening of a 4.11-kilometre stretch of the canal, extending from ridge to valley. The intervention has led to a marked rise in groundwater levels and positively impacted the livelihoods of farmers, livestock owners, and even local wildlife.

This canal restoration project was part of the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) efforts of the Allcargo Group, through its philanthropic arm Avashya Foundation. It was implemented in partnership with Sadbhavana Gramin Vikas Sanstha and Purti Sinchan Samruddhi Kalyankari Sanstha.

Inspired by the Tamaswada model of water conservation, the initiative focused on desilting and restoring the canal to enhance water retention and reduce soil erosion. According to Allcargo Group, the project resulted in the creation of 1,00,000 cubic metres of surface water storage and an annual contribution of 2,25,000 cubic metres to groundwater recharge.

“The initiative has enriched over 400 hectares of farmland, provided essential water for households, livestock, and protective irrigation for crops such as kharif, rabi, and vegetables. Overall, it is set to support over 1,200 farmers directly and benefit more than 3,000 individuals indirectly,” the statement noted.

Union Minister and Nagpur MP Nitin Gadkari lauded the project, highlighting its role in enhancing rural livelihoods and addressing agricultural distress in the Vidarbha region, which has long struggled with water scarcity and related agrarian challenges.

“Initiatives like these are critical for regions like Vidarbha, where water security can directly impact farmer welfare and help reduce distress. I commend the project and extend my best wishes for its long-term success,” Gadkari stated.

Shashi Kiran Shetty, Founder and Chairman of Allcargo Group, emphasized the company’s commitment to sustainable development:

“We are proud to contribute to alleviating water scarcity in Vidarbha. Reviving traditional water sources and strengthening groundwater reserves are essential for rejuvenating rivers, wetlands, and forests while boosting the rural economy.”

This impactful project not only addresses immediate needs like drinking water and irrigation but also sets the foundation for long-term ecological and agricultural sustainability in the region.
