India strengthened their grip on the second Test against Sri Lanka after piling up a massive 503/9 declared on a rain-affected second day at the Sinhalese Sports Club.
Devdutt Padikkal continued his sensational form with another century, scoring 117, while wicketkeeper-batter Dhruv Jurel produced a brilliant unbeaten 115 to take India past the 500-run mark. Captain Shubman Gill also contributed a half-century, while Rishabh Pant added valuable runs despite an injury scare earlier in the innings.
Jurel’s century was particularly memorable. After reaching three figures, he celebrated by displaying his “Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan” tattoo. His 115* came off 171 balls and helped India declare at 503/9.
India then made an immediate impact with the ball. Prasidh Krishna and Pulkit Suthar struck early as Sri Lanka slipped to 8/2 at stumps, leaving the hosts trailing India by a massive 495 runs with eight wickets remaining.
The match has also witnessed some drama, with Yashasvi Jaiswal and Asitha Fernando involved in a heated exchange after Jaiswal’s dismissal on the opening day. Both players were subsequently penalised by the ICC.
With India already having won the first Test in Galle by 165 runs, the visitors are now in a commanding position to seal the series in Colombo.
