Indian equity markets opened lower on Tuesday as elevated crude oil prices and renewed geopolitical uncertainty weighed on investor sentiment. Rising concerns over possible disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz added pressure to markets and increased caution among investors.
The 30-share BSE Sensex declined 320.14 points to 78,204.40 in early trade, while the 50-share NSE Nifty fell 94.35 points to 24,490.85.
Oil Prices Remain a Key Concern
Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, was trading marginally lower by 0.13% at $87.61 per barrel, but remained significantly elevated amid geopolitical tensions.
WTI crude also moved back towards the $82 per barrel level, reflecting continuing concerns about potential disruptions to oil supplies linked to the Strait of Hormuz.
Higher crude prices are particularly important for India because the country relies heavily on imported crude oil. Sustained increases in oil prices can put pressure on inflation, the rupee and corporate margins, particularly for oil-sensitive industries.
Geopolitical Uncertainty Weighs on Markets
According to Ponmudi R, CEO of Enrich Money, renewed geopolitical uncertainty has triggered a rebound in crude oil prices while contributing to weakness in U.S. markets and a subdued start across several Asian markets.
Investors are closely watching developments involving the United States and Iran, particularly discussions surrounding compensation and conditions related to reopening the Strait of Hormuz.
Until greater clarity emerges, market participants are expected to remain cautious, with equities likely to remain sensitive to global headlines.
Sensex Stocks Under Pressure
Several major stocks from the Sensex pack traded lower during early trading.
Among the notable laggards were:
- InterGlobe Aviation
- Axis Bank
- UltraTech Cement
- Bharti Airtel
- Eternal
- Bajaj Finance
On the other hand, Titan, HCL Technologies, Tech Mahindra and Infosys were among the stocks trading higher.
Asian Markets Show Mixed Trend
Asian markets also reflected the cautious global environment.
South Korea’s KOSPI traded higher, while China’s Shanghai SSE Composite and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng traded lower.
U.S. markets had ended lower on Monday, adding to the subdued global backdrop for Indian equities.
Investors Await Earnings and Global Developments
Market participants are expected to maintain a wait-and-watch approach, with India’s ongoing corporate earnings season continuing to drive stock-specific movements.
Analysts said elevated crude prices could limit the broader market’s upside in the near term and place additional pressure on sectors that are particularly sensitive to energy costs.
At the same time, foreign institutional investors remained buyers. FIIs purchased equities worth ₹1,974.76 crore on Monday, according to exchange data.
Previous Session
On Monday, the Sensex had gained 43.27 points, or 0.06%, to close at 78,542.44.
The Nifty also edged higher by 13.15 points, or 0.05%, ending the session at 24,583.80.
The latest decline therefore comes as investors reassess market valuations against higher oil prices, geopolitical risks and the outlook for corporate earnings.
