NTPC Green Energy Limited (NGEL), a subsidiary of NTPC Limited, has secured a 200 MW/800 MWh standalone Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project from West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (WBSEDCL).
The project was awarded through WBSEDCL’s tender for standalone battery energy storage systems and will strengthen West Bengal’s ability to store renewable electricity and supply power during periods of higher demand.
NTPC Green Wins BESS Tender
According to a regulatory filing by NGEL, the company secured the project at a tariff of ₹4.35 lakh per MW per month.
The project forms part of WBSEDCL’s larger procurement programme for a 500 MW/2,000 MWh standalone BESS capacity.
Battery storage systems allow electricity to be stored when power is available and discharged when it is required, helping distribution companies manage fluctuations in renewable generation and peak electricity demand.
200 MW/800 MWh Storage Capacity
The awarded project will provide:
- 200 MW of power capacity
- 800 MWh of energy storage capacity
- Standalone battery energy storage infrastructure
- Capacity to support grid balancing and renewable-energy integration
The four-hour storage configuration means the system can theoretically deliver its full 200 MW power output for up to four hours when fully charged.
Such systems are becoming increasingly important as India’s solar generation continues to rise, particularly because solar power generation is concentrated during daylight hours while electricity demand often remains high during evening periods.
Previous West Bengal BESS Tender Was Annulled
The latest award follows West Bengal’s earlier decision to annul a 250 MW/1,000 MWh BESS tender that had been awarded to Power Mech’s subsidiary, PM Green Private Limited.
The annulment was attributed to administrative and procedural circumstances beyond the control of either party.
The company clarified that the decision was not related to any default or non-compliance by the bidder. As a result, the bid security and performance bank guarantee submitted by the subsidiary were released in full without deductions or forfeiture.
Growing BESS Activity in West Bengal
The latest NTPC Green project is part of a broader increase in battery storage development across West Bengal.
CESC recently awarded a 40 MW/80 MWh BESS project in Kolkata to ABCI Infrastructure.
The project is being developed at the New Cossipore Generating Station under a Build-Own-Operate-Transfer (BOOT) model.
Under that arrangement, CESC will provide the land and manage charging and power offtake, while the project will have a 12-year power purchase agreement.
The storage system will be connected at a minimum voltage level of 33 kV.
Storage Becomes Critical for Renewable Energy
The expansion of BESS projects in West Bengal reflects a wider trend across India’s electricity sector.
As solar and wind capacity increases, electricity storage is becoming essential for managing fluctuations in renewable generation and improving grid reliability.
Battery storage can help distribution companies shift electricity from periods of surplus generation to periods of high demand, reducing pressure on the grid and making renewable power more dispatchable.
NTPC Green’s latest 200 MW/800 MWh project therefore adds another significant storage asset to India’s rapidly expanding battery energy storage ecosystem.
