New Delhi, August 6: Nagaland Minister for Tourism and Higher Education Temjen Imna Along has called for greater accountability among non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and civil society groups, stating that the state needs “responsible NGOs and Civil Societies” to support long-term development and social progress.
Speaking at the All Nagaland College Students Union (ANCSU) Degree Toppers Felicitation Programme held at SIRD Hall in Kohima, the minister remarked that Nagaland had created “too many unnecessary NGOs and Civil Societies” and stressed the need for organisations that contribute meaningfully to the state’s growth.
Emphasising collective responsibility, Along urged all communities, including the 17 Naga tribes and non-Naga residents, to work together for a progressive and prosperous Nagaland. He said no community should be deprived of opportunities for development, whether in politics, public institutions or social organisations.
The minister highlighted the importance of setting long-term development goals instead of pursuing individual or community-specific interests. He expressed concern that despite over six decades of statehood, Nagaland remains one of the most divided societies in the country, with achievements and progress often viewed through an individual or sectional lens.
Calling for unity and inclusiveness, Along said the state’s focus should be on developing quality human resources while preserving indigenous identity. He urged parents, teachers and citizens to work collectively to build a stronger future for Nagaland.
Commending ANCSU for recognising academic excellence across communities, he appreciated the union for honouring both Naga and non-Naga students from the state. He said such initiatives promote inclusiveness and strengthen the vision of a united and progressive Nagaland.
During the event, ANCSU felicitated 47 academic toppers, including 20 students from Nagaland University, seven from Polytechnic institutions and 20 from Autonomous Colleges. The programme also featured addresses by student leaders and academic achievers, celebrating excellence in higher education across the state.
