Gujarat has retained its position as India’s leading wind energy state, recording the highest installed wind power capacity of 16,086 MW as of June 30, 2026, according to data released by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE).
The state also generated 33,706 million units (MUs) of electricity from wind energy during FY 2025–26, accounting for nearly one-third of India’s total wind power generation, reinforcing its leadership in the country’s renewable energy sector.
Driving India’s Wind Energy Growth
India’s total installed wind power capacity has reached 57,443 MW, with annual wind energy generation increasing to 106 billion units during FY 2025–26.
Gujarat’s contribution has played a significant role in this growth, supporting the country’s efforts to enhance energy security, expand renewable energy generation and reduce carbon emissions.
Policy Support Fuels Expansion
The growth of Gujarat’s wind energy sector has been supported by a series of national policy initiatives, including:
- Green Energy Corridor Scheme, enabling new transmission infrastructure for renewable power evacuation.
- Waiver of Inter-State Transmission System (ISTS) charges, encouraging investments in renewable energy projects.
- National Repowering and Life Extension Policy for Wind Power Projects, 2023, promoting the modernization of existing wind farms.
- Offshore Wind Energy Lease Rules, 2023, creating a framework for offshore wind development.
- Viability Gap Funding (VGF) Scheme for offshore wind projects to accelerate investments in the sector.
These initiatives have helped strengthen grid integration while encouraging large-scale deployment of wind energy projects.
Strong Renewable Energy Ecosystem
The Gujarat government attributed the state’s performance to continued investments in renewable energy infrastructure, investor-friendly policies and an enabling regulatory environment.
The state has focused on expanding transmission networks, improving project implementation and creating a conducive ecosystem for clean energy investments, allowing it to maximize its wind energy potential.
Supporting India’s Clean Energy Goals
Gujarat’s wind energy achievements contribute significantly to India’s long-term renewable energy ambitions, including the national target of achieving 500 GW of non-fossil fuel-based installed capacity by 2030.
The state’s continued leadership in renewable energy is expected to play an important role in advancing India’s energy transition, improving grid reliability and supporting the country’s climate commitments.
