Adani Green Energy Ltd (AGEL) has become the first renewable energy company in India to surpass 20 gigawatts (GW) of operational renewable energy capacity, achieving the milestone entirely through greenfield project development. The company said the achievement marks the largest and fastest renewable energy capacity expansion by any private player in the country.
With more than 20 GW of operational capacity, AGEL now generates over 52 billion units of clean electricity annually, accounting for nearly 3% of India’s total electricity consumption. According to the company, this output is sufficient to power New York City for an entire year or meet the combined annual electricity demand of Mumbai and New Delhi.
The milestone comes within just 10 years of commissioning the company’s first renewable energy project at Kamuthi, Tamil Nadu, in 2016. During FY26, AGEL added 5,051 MW of renewable energy capacity, the highest annual capacity addition by any renewable energy company outside China.
Commenting on the achievement, Sagar Adani, Executive Director of Adani Green Energy Ltd, said crossing the 20 GW mark reflects the company’s long-term vision and disciplined execution. He noted that the company now supplies clean electricity on a scale comparable to the combined annual power requirements of India’s two largest metropolitan cities, contributing significantly to the country’s energy security while accelerating its clean energy transition.
AGEL’s operational portfolio currently includes approximately 14.2 GW of solar power, 2.7 GW of wind energy and 3.3 GW of wind-solar hybrid projects. The company has also commissioned 3.55 GWh of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), which it describes as the largest battery storage deployment outside China and one of the fastest executed globally.
Highlighting the growing importance of energy storage, the company said battery systems are becoming essential as renewable energy contributes a larger share of India’s electricity mix. Reliable storage solutions enable renewable power to be supplied even when solar and wind generation fluctuate, improving grid stability and energy reliability.
Looking ahead, AGEL plans to commission an additional 10 GWh of battery storage during FY27 and expand its total battery storage portfolio to 50 GWh over the next five years. The expansion will support the company’s ambitious goal of achieving 50 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030, further strengthening its position as one of the world’s leading renewable energy developers.
