Switzerland, Nov 30 : WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus congratulated Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala on her reappointment as WTO Director-General for a second term.

Sharing his message on X, Ghebreyesus said, “Congratulations, my sister @NOIweala! The trust @wto Member States have invested in you is well deserved. Looking forward to continuing our close collaboration.”

The WTO, in an official statement, confirmed that the General Council unanimously reappointed Okonjo-Iweala for a second four-year term starting September 1, 2025. Her reappointment reflects widespread recognition of her leadership and vision for global trade.

Okonjo-Iweala, who first took office on March 1, 2021, as the WTO’s first woman and African Director-General, expressed gratitude to member states and outlined her priorities for the next term.

“My vision for the WTO over the next four years is to deliver impactful results by addressing legacy agreements, focusing on reforms for 21st-century relevance, and seizing new opportunities in world trade,” she said.

She further acknowledged the challenges ahead while emphasizing the potential to create transformative opportunities for people and contribute to planetary sustainability.
