Surat, 5 Sept 25 : Environmentalist Viral Desai, popularly known as the Green Man of Surat, has achieved a historic milestone with his “Tree Ganesha” campaign being officially recognized by the Asia Book of Records.

The initiative is the world’s only religious and cultural celebration built entirely around environmental conservation. Over the past eight years, it has mobilized lakhs of young people to become active “environment warriors,” blending devotion with ecology by replacing traditional Ganesha idols with the planting of saplings.

The Human Story Behind the Movement

The inspiration for Tree Ganesha traces back to an incident years ago at a medical camp in the tribal-dominated Dang district. Desai observed that not a single woman tested positive for breast cancer. Doctors attributed this extraordinary finding to their close connection with nature, traditional lifestyles, and a clean environment.

“That moment changed me,” Desai recalls. “If harmony with nature can shield people from deadly diseases, imagine the impact if our cities embraced greenery. That is when I decided to adopt tree plantation as my life’s mission.”

Since then, Desai has committed himself to planting over one crore trees. Yet he admits this alone cannot reverse the damage caused by deforestation and climate change. “One crore trees is only the beginning. To truly heal our planet, every citizen must contribute. If we don’t act today, future generations will pay the price.”

Building a Green Revolution

Tree Ganesha is part of Desai’s larger movement, “Satyagraha Against Pollution and Climate Change,” which has already prepared more than one lakh students as green warriors. The campaign has also expanded into study tours and workshops on biodiversity, ecosystem restoration, and urban forests, giving young people hands-on exposure to environmental challenges.

The initiative enjoys strong institutional support from the Surat Police, Gujarat Pollution Control Board (GPCB), and the Forest Department, which has helped scale the movement to new levels.

Recognition and the Road Ahead

Accepting the Asia Book of Records honor, Desai said: “Tree Ganesha is not just a festival but a revolution. This recognition is proof that our collective effort is making a difference. But awards are only milestones—the true goal is to secure the future of our planet.”

Despite the recognition, Desai stresses the urgent need for climate action: “We must move beyond symbolism. Planting trees, conserving biodiversity, reducing pollution—these are no longer choices, they are survival strategies.”

A Mission Beyond Numbers

With his personal pledge to plant more than one crore trees, Viral Desai continues to inspire communities across Gujarat and India. For him, every sapling planted is not just a tree—it is a promise of cleaner air, healthier lives, and a sustainable tomorrow.
