Telangana has held a pre-bid meeting for tenders covering 7,800 MW of renewable energy and energy storage capacity, as the state moves to expand clean power procurement and strengthen its ability to meet rising electricity demand. Around 190 prospective bidders participated in the meeting, with approximately 120 joining online and 70 attending in person.
The tendering process has been initiated by the Telangana Renewable Energy Development Corporation (TGREDCO) and the Telangana Power Generation Corporation (TGGENCO), in line with the Telangana Clean and Green Energy Policy 2025. The procurement programme covers solar power, wind energy, firm and dispatchable renewable energy, and battery energy storage systems.
The meeting, held at Vidyut Soudha in Hyderabad, provided prospective bidders an opportunity to raise questions about tender conditions and technical requirements. Officials discussed the issues raised and provided clarifications where possible, while assuring participants that remaining queries and objections would be examined.
Solar, Wind and Round-the-Clock Renewable Power in Focus
Under the procurement programme, TGREDCO has invited bids for 2,000 MW of Firm and Dispatchable Renewable Energy (FDRE) on a round-the-clock basis. The minimum bid capacity is 50 MW, while bidders can submit proposals for up to 1,000 MW.
The corporation has also issued tenders for 3,000 MW of solar power capacity integrated with a battery energy storage system of 1,000 MW and 6,000 MWh. The minimum bid capacity for this component has been set at 50 MW.
In addition, TGREDCO has invited bids for 800 MW of wind power projects. The minimum bid capacity is 50 MW, while the maximum permitted capacity per bid is 400 MW.
Separately, TGGENCO has issued a tender for a 2,000 MW battery energy storage system under the FDRE framework. The project comprises four units of 500 MW each, designed to store and supply electricity for four hours.
These components are intended to expand renewable power availability while supporting electricity storage and more flexible supply to meet demand at different times of the day.
Officials Emphasise Transparent Tendering
Musharraf Faruqui, Vice-Chairman and Managing Director of TGREDCO, said the tendering process was being conducted in accordance with applicable rules and regulations. He also noted that procedures followed by the Solar Energy Corporation of India in successfully completed tendering processes were being adopted.
S. Harish, Chairman and Managing Director of TGGENCO, highlighted the need to ensure adequate electricity availability amid increasing demand. He encouraged prospective bidders to submit their queries and suggestions to the authorities, which would examine the issues and provide the necessary clarifications.
During the meeting, bidders raised questions concerning tender conditions and technical aspects of the proposed projects. Officials addressed the queries wherever possible and assured participants that the remaining concerns would be reviewed, with transparency maintained throughout the process.
Battery Storage to Support Renewable Energy Integration
Battery energy storage is an important component of Telangana’s procurement plans, alongside new solar and wind capacity. Storage systems can help retain electricity generated during periods of high renewable output and make it available when demand rises or generation declines.
The proposed solar-plus-storage projects and the separate 2,000 MW battery storage tender are intended to strengthen the state’s capacity to manage electricity demand and improve the availability of renewable power.
As Telangana pursues its clean energy policy objectives, the outcome of the tendering process will be important for expanding renewable energy procurement and developing the storage infrastructure required to support a more flexible electricity system.
