Melbourne, 10 July: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has invited Australian businesses and investors to play a greater role in India’s clean energy transition and infrastructure development, highlighting vast opportunities in renewable energy, nuclear power, critical minerals, and manufacturing.
Addressing business leaders at the India–Australia CEO Forum and Economic Roadmap Business Reception in Melbourne, attended by Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, PM Modi said Australia could make a significant contribution to India’s ambitious target of achieving 500 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030 and net-zero emissions by 2070.
“India is building a strong manufacturing ecosystem for hydropower equipment, green hydrogen, solar modules, and wind turbines. Australia’s technology, capital, and natural resources can help accelerate this clean energy transition,” the Prime Minister said.
He also highlighted India’s long-term nuclear energy plans, noting that the country aims to achieve 100 GW of nuclear power capacity by 2047. Referring to Australia’s vast uranium reserves, PM Modi said the two nations have strong potential to deepen cooperation in the civil nuclear energy sector.
Beyond energy, the Prime Minister encouraged Australian institutional investors to participate in India’s rapidly expanding infrastructure sector, pointing to investment opportunities in ports, airports, highways, railways, logistics, and urban infrastructure.
The visit is also expected to strengthen cooperation in critical minerals and resilient supply chains, which are essential for manufacturing electric vehicles, batteries, renewable energy technologies, and other clean energy equipment.
Indian High Commissioner to Australia Nagesh Singh said discussions between the two countries are already underway at both government and industry levels to build long-term partnerships in critical minerals. He noted that future collaboration would extend beyond a traditional buyer-seller relationship to include value addition, processing, and joint manufacturing.
Prime Minister Modi’s meeting with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese forms part of his three-nation visit covering Indonesia, Australia, and New Zealand. During the Australia leg of the visit, both leaders are expected to discuss expanding cooperation in trade and investment, defence and security, education, emerging technologies, mobility, clean energy, and people-to-people ties.
The renewed focus on renewable energy, critical minerals, and advanced technologies reflects the growing strategic partnership between India and Australia as both countries work toward a secure, sustainable, and low-carbon future.
