NHPC Limited and the Chhattisgarh State Power Distribution Company Limited (CSPDCL) have signed a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) for the supply of electricity from NHPC’s upcoming 1,720 MW Kamala Hydro Electric Project in Arunachal Pradesh, strengthening long-term clean energy cooperation between the two organisations.
Signed in Raipur on July 14, the agreement provides for the supply of hydroelectric power to CSPDCL for a period of 40 years from the Commercial Operation Date (COD) of the project. The long-term partnership is expected to enhance Chhattisgarh’s energy security while supporting India’s transition towards a cleaner and more sustainable power sector.
The Kamala Hydro Electric Project, one of NHPC’s major hydropower developments in Arunachal Pradesh, is expected to contribute significantly to India’s renewable energy capacity by supplying reliable, low-carbon electricity. Hydropower continues to play a crucial role in balancing the national grid, supporting renewable integration and providing dependable power during peak demand.
Speaking on the occasion, NHPC Chairman and Managing Director Bhupender Gupta said the agreement represents another important milestone in NHPC’s commitment to advancing India’s clean energy transition through sustainable hydropower projects. He noted that the long-term partnership would strengthen energy security while contributing to the country’s renewable energy and decarbonisation goals.
The Power Purchase Agreement was signed by Ranjeet Thakur, General Manager (Commercial), NHPC, and V.K. Sai, Executive Director (Regulatory Affairs & Power Management), CSPDCL, in the presence of senior officials from both organisations.
The agreement reflects the growing emphasis on long-term renewable energy procurement as states continue to diversify their power portfolios with reliable clean energy sources. Once operational, the Kamala Hydro Electric Project is expected to play a key role in supporting India’s target of expanding non-fossil fuel-based electricity generation while ensuring a stable supply of renewable power to consumers.
With hydropower serving as an important complement to solar and wind energy, the project is expected to strengthen grid stability, improve energy reliability and contribute to India’s broader vision of achieving sustainable and secure energy for the future.
