IndiGo Ventures, the venture investment arm of Indian airline IndiGo, has invested in Bengaluru-based sovereign AI startup Sarvam as part of the company’s ongoing Series B funding round. The investment is expected to deepen the existing partnership between the airline and Sarvam, with both companies working to deploy artificial intelligence across IndiGo’s customer-facing and operational functions.
The partnership brings together IndiGo’s aviation expertise and large operational scale with Sarvam’s India-built AI models and enterprise technology, including voice-based and agentic AI systems.
AI across IndiGo’s operations
IndiGo and Sarvam were already collaborating on the use of AI within the airline. Their work includes developing tools aimed at improving the passenger experience, employee support and operational workflows.
The new investment is expected to take this collaboration further, allowing both companies to explore more sophisticated AI applications for the aviation industry.
IndiGo’s Chief Digital and Information Officer Neetan Chopra said AI is becoming a foundational capability for aviation, with potential applications ranging from customer experience and workforce productivity to operational decision-making.
The airline believes combining Sarvam’s technology with its own operational expertise and scale can accelerate the deployment of AI solutions that deliver measurable value to passengers, employees and other stakeholders.
Sarvam’s focus on sovereign AI
Founded in 2023 by Vivek Raghavan and Pratyush Kumar, Sarvam develops AI models and enterprise technology across areas including text, speech, computer vision and document processing.
The company is also building infrastructure for training and running AI models, alongside agentic AI systems designed to perform tasks for enterprises.
Sarvam’s focus on sovereign AI is particularly significant as Indian companies and institutions increasingly seek AI technologies that can be developed and deployed with greater control over their data, infrastructure and technology stack.
The company is using its Series B funding to develop frontier AI models and expand applications in areas such as agentic AI, coding and cybersecurity. It also plans to invest further in computing infrastructure and increase its enterprise deployments.
$234 million Series B first close
Sarvam announced the first close of its Series B round in June, raising $234 million at a post-money valuation of $1.5 billion.
The round included major investors such as HCLTech and Bessemer Venture Partners, alongside existing backers Khosla Ventures and Peak XV Partners.
The latest fundraising represents a major jump from Sarvam’s earlier funding. The company raised $41 million in its Series A round in December 2023, led by Lightspeed with participation from Peak XV Partners and Khosla Ventures.
The investment from IndiGo Ventures therefore adds a strategic corporate investor to Sarvam’s growing list of financial and technology-focused backers.
Why aviation is an important AI use case
Sarvam co-founder Pratyush Kumar highlighted aviation as a particularly strong environment for enterprise AI because it combines millions of customer interactions with complex and time-sensitive operations.
Airlines have to simultaneously manage passengers, employees, flight operations, documentation, customer support and rapidly changing operational conditions. This creates numerous opportunities for AI systems that can automate repetitive tasks, assist employees and support faster decision-making.
For Sarvam, working with IndiGo provides access to a large-scale real-world environment in which its AI systems can be tested and deployed in production.
The partnership could potentially serve as a model for how Indian AI companies can work with large domestic enterprises to build AI systems specifically suited to Indian business requirements.
IndiGo Ventures expands its technology investments
The Sarvam investment is also part of IndiGo Ventures’ broader strategy of backing startups and technologies that could have applications across aviation, mobility and travel.
IndiGo Ventures received SEBI approval in 2024 to establish an Alternative Investment Fund with a corpus of ₹600 crore, along with a ₹300 crore green-shoe option.
The venture arm has already invested in other emerging technologies. This includes a ₹10 crore investment in Bengaluru-based Sarla Aviation, which is developing electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft for potential air-taxi applications.
With the investment in Sarvam, IndiGo Ventures is adding sovereign AI and enterprise artificial intelligence to its strategic technology portfolio.
A broader push for AI in Indian enterprises
The deal highlights the growing shift from experimenting with generative AI to deploying AI directly into large-scale business operations.
For Sarvam, IndiGo provides an opportunity to demonstrate how its models, voice technology and agentic systems can operate in a complex, high-volume enterprise environment.
For IndiGo, the partnership provides access to AI technology developed in India that can potentially be customised around the specific requirements of the aviation industry.
As Sarvam continues investing in frontier models, computing infrastructure and enterprise AI, the IndiGo partnership could become an important test case for the practical deployment of Indian-built AI across critical commercial operations.
