India’s solar energy sector has recorded remarkable growth over the past four years, with solar power generation increasing by nearly 138% between FY22 and FY26. According to the latest government data, solar electricity generation rose from 73.48 billion units (BU) in FY22 to 174.76 BU in FY26, highlighting the country’s rapid progress towards clean energy adoption.
The expansion has also significantly increased solar energy’s contribution to the national power mix. Its share in India’s total electricity generation nearly doubled during the period, rising from 4.95% in FY22 to 9.50% in FY26.
Strong Momentum Continues in FY27
The growth has continued into the current financial year. During the April–June quarter of FY27, India generated 62.79 billion units of solar electricity, accounting for 12.03% of the country’s total power generation of 521.82 billion units.
Renewable energy sources collectively generated 137.81 billion units during the first quarter, contributing 26.41% of India’s overall electricity production.
The figures underline the increasing role of renewable energy in meeting the country’s growing electricity demand while reducing dependence on fossil fuels.
Renewable Energy Capacity Crosses 52%
As of June 2026, renewable energy accounted for 52.6% of India’s total installed power generation capacity, marking another important milestone in the country’s energy transition.
However, renewables contributed around 26% of actual electricity generation, primarily because solar and wind power depend on weather conditions and generally operate at lower capacity utilisation compared to conventional thermal power plants.
Power Generation Continues to Grow
India’s total electricity generation increased steadily from 1,484.36 billion units in FY22 to 1,840.11 billion units in FY26.
Over the same period, renewable electricity generation—including solar, wind, biomass, bagasse, small hydro and large hydro—rose from 322.53 billion units to 477.78 billion units.
As a result, renewables’ share in India’s total electricity generation increased from 21.73% in FY22 to 25.96% in FY26.
Solar Remains Fastest-Growing Renewable Source
Solar power has consistently recorded strong year-on-year growth over the last four financial years:
- FY22: 73.48 billion units
- FY23: 102.01 billion units
- FY24: 115.97 billion units
- FY25: 144.15 billion units
- FY26: 174.76 billion units
The continued expansion reflects India’s large-scale investments in utility-scale solar parks, rooftop solar installations, and grid infrastructure, while supporting the country’s long-term renewable energy and climate commitments.
