Indian boxer Preeti Pawar has assured India of at least a bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games after registering a dominant 5-0 unanimous decision victory over Nicole Clyde of Northern Ireland in the women’s 54kg quarterfinal at the Scottish Event Campus in Glasgow.
The 22-year-old boxer from Bhiwani, Haryana, produced an all-round performance, combining aggressive attacking boxing with disciplined defence to outclass her opponent and book a place in the semifinals.
Commanding Performance from Start to Finish
Preeti controlled the contest from the opening bell, using quick footwork and sharp combinations to keep Clyde on the defensive.
Her accurate right and left jabs earned unanimous favour from the judges in the opening round, with four judges scoring it 10-9 and one awarding a 10-8 advantage to the Indian boxer.
She maintained the momentum in the second round, landing precise jabs and uppercuts while moving confidently around the ring to once again secure a unanimous round in her favour.
Strong Defence Seals Comfortable Victory
Alongside her attacking display, Preeti showcased impressive defensive skills, consistently evading or blocking Clyde’s attempts to close the distance.
Despite a determined effort from the Northern Irish boxer, Preeti remained in complete control throughout the final round to seal a comprehensive 5-0 victory and secure her place in the last four.
Guaranteed Commonwealth Games Medal
With the semifinal qualification, Preeti has guaranteed herself at least a bronze medal, adding another significant achievement to her growing international career.
Following the victory, Preeti thanked supporters across India and said she was determined to continue giving her best in the remaining bouts.
“I would like to thank all the Indians for their blessings and prayers. There were many challenges in my life, and now I am able to understand my game better. I gave my 100% today and will give my 100% in the next bout as well,” she said.
She also credited her training camp in Belfast, where she sparred with Nicole Clyde before the Commonwealth Games, saying the experience helped her prepare effectively for the quarterfinal contest.
The semifinal victory now stands between Preeti and a chance to compete for the Commonwealth Games gold medal.
