Beijing, 16 June: China’s National Energy Administration (NEA) has called for enhanced efforts to strengthen renewable energy grid integration and improve clean energy consumption as the country begins implementing its 15th Five-Year Plan (2026–2030). The agency said renewable energy is playing an increasingly important role in ensuring energy security and supporting industrial decarbonization.
According to the NEA, authorities will focus on improving five key areas of the power system—grid connectivity, regulation, dispatching, forecasting, and cross-regional power support—to facilitate greater integration of renewable energy into the national electricity network. The announcement was made during a monthly review meeting on renewable energy development and construction.
Official data showed that by the end of April 2026, China’s installed renewable energy capacity had surpassed 2.4 billion kilowatts, accounting for 60.5% of the country’s total power generation capacity. Renewable energy additions during the first four months of the year reached 75.16 million kilowatts, representing more than 70% of newly installed capacity. During the same period, renewable energy generation totaled 1.2 trillion kilowatt-hours, accounting for 36.4% of national electricity consumption.
The NEA also reported that combined grid-connected wind and solar power capacity reached 1.911 billion kilowatts, generating 805.2 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity and contributing 24.1% of total power consumption. The agency has urged local authorities and developers to accelerate large-scale wind and solar projects, streamline approvals, and strengthen local consumption of renewable energy.
China is also working to improve market mechanisms that support renewable energy generation and energy storage deployment. Authorities said future reforms would seek to balance market-based pricing with stable revenue streams for clean energy developers while advancing the country’s carbon peaking and carbon neutrality goals.
According to China’s Renewable Energy Development Report released earlier this month, green electricity met all incremental power demand generated by the country’s economic growth in 2025 for the first time. China added a record amount of renewable energy capacity last year, accounting for more than 60% of global additions. The country is expected to install approximately 300 million kilowatts of new wind and solar capacity in 2026, further cementing renewable energy as a key driver of its green transition.
