Dave Brown, one of Amazon Web Services’ most senior executives and a member of Amazon’s elite leadership team advising CEO Andy Jassy, will leave the company later this month after a distinguished 19-year career with the cloud computing giant.
According to an internal memo from AWS CEO Matt Garman, Brown is departing to pursue another professional opportunity, although the company has not disclosed details about his next role. Brown most recently served as Senior Vice President of Compute and Machine Learning Services, leading some of AWS’s most critical cloud computing and artificial intelligence businesses.
In the memo, Garman praised Brown’s contributions to AWS and expressed confidence in the company’s future, stating that AWS has never been in a stronger position and remains well placed to capitalize on the growing global demand for cloud and AI technologies.
Brown has been one of the most recognisable leaders within AWS, frequently delivering keynote presentations at the company’s flagship customer conference in Las Vegas. Promoted to Senior Vice President in April, he joined Amazon’s prestigious S-Team in 2023—a select group of senior executives that directly advises CEO Andy Jassy on the company’s strategic direction. The S-Team currently consists of 28 members and is regarded as Amazon’s highest leadership body.
Amazon has announced that Dave Treadwell, currently Senior Vice President of E-commerce Foundation, will succeed Brown as the new head of AWS Compute and Machine Learning Services. Treadwell, who is also a member of the S-Team, will officially assume the role on August 1.
The leadership transition comes at a time when AWS continues to invest heavily in artificial intelligence, cloud infrastructure and next-generation computing technologies as competition intensifies among global cloud providers. Brown’s departure marks the exit of another long-serving executive who played a significant role in AWS’s rise as the world’s leading cloud computing platform.
Despite the change in leadership, Amazon indicated that AWS remains focused on expanding its AI capabilities and strengthening its position in the rapidly evolving cloud services market.
