The Andhra Pradesh government has announced an ambitious roadmap to become India’s leading state in climate action, energy conservation and sustainable development, aligning environmental protection with long-term economic growth.
The announcement was made by Chief Secretary G. Sai Prasad while unveiling a joint report prepared by Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), under the Ministry of Power, and the Andhra Pradesh State Energy Conservation Mission (APSECM).
The state government aims to build a low-carbon economy by accelerating renewable energy adoption, improving energy efficiency, expanding green cover, and promoting sustainable resource management.
Green Growth to Power Andhra’s Economy
Chief Secretary Sai Prasad said Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has set an ambitious target of achieving 12% economic growth by integrating:
- Green energy
- Energy efficiency
- Water conservation
- Sustainable infrastructure
The strategy seeks to balance rapid economic development with environmental responsibility, positioning Andhra Pradesh as a national leader in climate-friendly growth.
Energy Efficiency to Play a Major Role
According to the report, energy efficiency alone can contribute nearly 40% of the efforts required to combat climate change.
To achieve this, Andhra Pradesh will adopt advanced energy-efficient technologies developed by:
- Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE)
- Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL)
- Convergence Energy Services Limited (CESL)
These technologies will be implemented across multiple sectors, including:
- Municipal administration
- Urban development
- MSMEs (Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises)
- Government welfare institutions
The initiative aims to reduce energy consumption, lower carbon emissions, and improve operational efficiency across public infrastructure.
Renewable Energy Expansion Continues
Andhra Pradesh currently has an installed power generation capacity of 21,457 MW, with renewable energy contributing nearly 37% of the state’s total installed capacity.
The government plans to further strengthen its renewable energy ecosystem through continued investment in clean power generation and energy-efficient infrastructure.
Ambitious Green Cover Targets
As part of its long-term climate strategy, Andhra Pradesh has set ambitious afforestation goals.
The state plans to increase its forest and green cover:
- From 30% to 37% by 2030
- To 50% by 2047
Expanding green cover is expected to improve biodiversity, enhance carbon sequestration, and strengthen climate resilience across the state.
Centre-State Partnership
The Chief Secretary expressed confidence that collaboration between the Central Government and the Andhra Pradesh Government would serve as a model for other states.
The partnership aims to accelerate progress toward:
- India’s climate commitments
- Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
- Energy conservation targets
- Green economic growth
Officials believe the integrated approach will help Andhra Pradesh emerge as one of India’s most sustainable and climate-resilient states over the coming decades.
