Sony Group and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) are planning to invest around 1 trillion Japanese yen ($6.32 billion, approximately ₹52,000 crore) to jointly develop and manufacture next-generation chips used in image sensors, according to a report by Japan’s Nikkei.
The proposed investment highlights the growing importance of advanced image-sensing technology as demand rises across smartphones, automobiles, robotics and emerging physical AI applications.
Joint Venture Planned in Japan
According to the report, a new joint venture between Sony and TSMC will be established with Sony holding around 60% and TSMC owning 40%.
The facility is planned for Kumamoto prefecture in southern Japan, with commercial production potentially beginning as early as 2029.
The proposed manufacturing operation is expected to focus on next-generation microchips designed for advanced image sensors.
Sony declined to comment on the Nikkei report, while TSMC had not immediately responded to Reuters’ request for comment.
Combining Sony’s Sensor Expertise With TSMC Manufacturing
Sony and TSMC had already announced plans in May to establish a joint venture in Japan focused on the development and manufacturing of next-generation image sensors.
The partnership is expected to combine Sony’s expertise in image-sensor design and technology with TSMC’s semiconductor manufacturing and advanced process capabilities.
The two companies are also exploring applications beyond traditional smartphones and consumer electronics.
