KPI Green Energy Limited has commissioned 200 MW (AC)/269 MW (DC) of solar power capacity at GIPCL’s Solar Park in Khavda, Gujarat, marking a significant milestone in its 300 MW Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) project being developed for Coal India Limited (CIL). The newly commissioned capacity has been certified by the Gujarat Energy Development Agency (GEDA), reinforcing the project’s compliance with state renewable energy standards.
The commissioned capacity forms part of a larger 300 MW (AC)/405 MW (DC) grid-connected ground-mounted solar photovoltaic (PV) project being executed by KPI Green Energy on behalf of Coal India under the EPC model. With the successful completion of the first phase, the remaining 100 MW (AC)/136 MW (DC) capacity is currently under development and progressing according to schedule.
Under the EPC agreement, KPI Green Energy is responsible for the end-to-end execution of the project, including engineering design, procurement of equipment, construction, testing and final commissioning of the solar power plant. The project highlights the company’s growing capabilities in delivering large-scale utility renewable energy infrastructure for major public sector enterprises.
The commissioning announcement was positively received by investors, with KPI Green Energy’s shares rising during Monday’s trading session despite weakness in the broader equity markets. While the benchmark Nifty 50 closed lower amid overall market pressure, KPI Green Energy’s stock gained following the announcement, reflecting investor confidence in the company’s execution capabilities and expanding order book.
Located in the Kutch district of Gujarat, Khavda has rapidly emerged as one of India’s largest renewable energy hubs owing to its vast stretches of available land, high solar irradiation and strong transmission infrastructure. The region has attracted several large-scale solar and wind energy projects and plays a central role in India’s ambition to significantly expand its renewable energy generation capacity over the coming years.
The latest commissioning also supports Coal India Limited’s ongoing diversification strategy beyond coal mining. As part of its long-term energy transition roadmap, the state-owned mining company has been investing in renewable energy assets to build a diversified and sustainable energy portfolio. Developing large-scale solar projects through experienced EPC partners enables Coal India to accelerate its clean energy expansion while leveraging private sector expertise.
For KPI Green Energy, the successful execution of a major project for one of India’s largest public sector enterprises further strengthens its position in the utility-scale renewable energy segment. The company has steadily expanded its presence across both government and private sector renewable energy projects, establishing itself as a leading developer and EPC contractor in the solar power industry.
KPI Green Energy, a part of the KP Group, has outlined an ambitious target of developing a 10 GW renewable energy portfolio by 2030. The Khavda solar project represents another important milestone toward achieving this long-term vision while enhancing the company’s installed renewable energy capacity and strengthening its project execution track record.
Headquartered in Gujarat, KPI Green Energy operates across two key business segments—Independent Power Producer (IPP) and Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC). The company develops, constructs and operates solar power projects for both captive consumers and third-party clients while also executing large-scale infrastructure projects for government agencies and corporate customers.
The successful commissioning of the first phase of the Coal India project underscores the increasing momentum of India’s renewable energy sector as both public and private organisations accelerate investments in clean energy infrastructure. Utility-scale solar projects such as the Khavda development are expected to play a crucial role in helping India achieve its renewable energy and decarbonisation targets while improving long-term energy security.
As India continues expanding its non-fossil fuel power generation capacity, projects executed through partnerships between public sector enterprises and private renewable energy developers are expected to remain a key driver of the country’s clean energy transition.
