Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has called upon Corporate India to redefine Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) by placing the preservation and promotion of India’s rich traditional craft heritage at the heart of its social development initiatives.
Speaking at an event organised by RSB Group at the National Crafts Museum in New Delhi, the Minister emphasised that India’s ancient crafts and textiles are not merely cultural assets but represent a vital part of the nation’s civilisational identity. He urged businesses to extend their CSR efforts beyond conventional sectors and actively invest in safeguarding the country’s artistic and cultural legacy.
Highlighting the growing role of technology in transforming the textile industry, Pradhan said emerging innovations should serve as powerful platforms that empower skilled artisans from ordinary households across the country. He stressed that integrating technology with traditional craftsmanship can improve market access, enhance livelihoods and ensure the long-term sustainability of India’s indigenous art forms.
The Minister noted that India’s textile and handicrafts sector holds immense potential to generate employment while preserving centuries-old traditions. By combining innovation with heritage conservation, corporates can contribute significantly to inclusive economic growth and rural development.
Pradhan also commended the efforts of RSB Group for identifying and supporting talented artisans at the grassroots level across Jharkhand, West Bengal, Odisha and Assam. He said such initiatives demonstrate how corporate participation can help preserve traditional skills while creating new economic opportunities for artisan communities.
The Minister underscored that CSR should increasingly focus on initiatives that create lasting social impact by strengthening local communities, protecting cultural heritage and promoting sustainable livelihoods. He encouraged industries to collaborate with artisans, educational institutions and cultural organisations to build a stronger ecosystem for India’s traditional crafts.
The event highlighted the importance of aligning CSR with India’s broader vision of preserving its cultural heritage while leveraging innovation and technology to create new opportunities for artisans and craft-based enterprises.
