The Bihar government has unveiled a series of major initiatives aimed at strengthening the state’s renewable energy sector and improving the lives of farmers. In a high-level meeting held in Patna, Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary, along with Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi, announced plans to introduce Bihar’s own Green Hydrogen Policy, expand solar energy projects and ensure uninterrupted daytime electricity supply for agriculture.
One of the biggest announcements was the decision to provide 12 hours of continuous electricity to farmers from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. through dedicated agricultural feeders. The move is expected to reduce farmers’ dependence on diesel-powered irrigation pumps, lower cultivation costs and eliminate the need for night-time irrigation, offering greater convenience and improved productivity.
The meeting also focused on accelerating Bihar’s transition towards clean energy. The Chief Minister said the state must reduce its dependence on conventional fossil fuels due to fluctuating global fuel prices and instead invest in renewable energy technologies that ensure long-term energy security.
As part of the roadmap, the government will expedite the implementation of the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, with district administrations directed to simplify and fast-track the application and approval process for rooftop solar installations.
The state also plans to promote the solarisation of agriculture under the PM-KUSUM Scheme, enabling farmers to generate solar power for irrigation while reducing electricity expenses. In addition, Bihar will explore the installation of floating solar power plants on ponds and reservoirs through scientific studies, maximising renewable energy generation without occupying agricultural land.
Looking ahead, Bihar will formulate a dedicated Green Hydrogen Policy to attract investment in clean energy industries and prepare the state for future industrial demand. The policy is expected to encourage the development of green hydrogen production and related technologies, positioning Bihar as an emerging hub for sustainable energy.
The government also announced plans to encourage greater private sector investment in solar, wind and hydropower projects by creating a transparent and investment-friendly ecosystem. Officials believe this will generate new employment opportunities, boost industrial development and strengthen Bihar’s renewable energy capacity.
Apart from the energy initiatives, Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary announced that ₹1,423.94 crore will be disbursed under various Central and State social security pension schemes, benefiting 97.84 lakh beneficiaries. Eligible senior citizens, widows and persons with disabilities will receive ₹1,100 each, with the government reaffirming its commitment to releasing pension payments on the 10th of every month.
The Bihar government said the combined initiatives will strengthen energy security, promote clean technology, reduce farming costs, attract new investments and contribute to the state’s long-term sustainable development goals.
