Jaipur: Rajasthan has achieved two significant milestones in its power sector by recording its highest-ever thermal power generation while also signing a clean energy partnership with the U.S. state of California to strengthen renewable energy cooperation.
The developments underscore the state’s strategy of balancing immediate energy security through conventional power generation with long-term investments in sustainable energy technologies.
Rajasthan’s state-owned power utility, Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited (RVUNL), achieved a record operational performance by running its thermal power plants at 94.6% of installed capacity. All 23 operational generating units collectively produced 7,171 MW of electricity in a single day, marking the highest-ever power generation by the utility.
State officials said the achievement reflects improvements in plant efficiency and operational reliability. The government now aims to sustain this level of performance throughout the year while setting new benchmarks in annual electricity generation.
In a parallel move to accelerate its clean energy transition, the Rajasthan Electricity Regulatory Commission (RERC) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the California Energy Commission to promote collaboration in renewable energy, grid modernisation, and advanced energy technologies.
The partnership will facilitate the exchange of technical expertise, regulatory best practices, and policy knowledge in areas such as renewable energy integration, Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), smart grids, and digital power management.
A key focus of the collaboration will be battery storage technology, enabling excess solar power generated during the day to be stored and supplied during periods of peak demand, thereby improving grid stability and the reliability of renewable energy.
The agreement also includes cooperation on advanced metering infrastructure, smart electricity networks, and electric vehicle charging infrastructure, with both sides expected to work together on research, innovation, and technology development.
Officials believe the collaboration will further strengthen Rajasthan’s position as one of India’s leading renewable energy states while supporting the rapid expansion of its solar and wind power capacity.
By combining record-breaking thermal power performance with international partnerships in clean energy, Rajasthan aims to enhance energy security, improve grid efficiency, and accelerate its transition towards a modern, low-carbon electricity ecosystem.
