Lucknow, 27June: Uttar Pradesh has become the first state in India to achieve more than 50,000 rooftop solar installations in each of three consecutive months—March, April and May 2026—under the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana (PMSGY). The milestone reinforces the state’s leadership in the country’s rooftop solar programme.
According to a review meeting held in June 2026, over 6.2 lakh households in Uttar Pradesh have already been equipped with rooftop solar systems under the scheme. This represents more than 50% of the state’s target of covering 11.27 lakh households, making Uttar Pradesh one of the best-performing states in the national programme.
The state currently accounts for nearly 17% of all rooftop solar installations across the country.
Reviewing the progress, UPNEDA Director Ravinder Singh said Uttar Pradesh has set a new national benchmark by maintaining more than 50,000 installations per month for three consecutive months. He stressed the need to secure the top position in cumulative household solarisation by ensuring that every eligible application is converted into an installation.
Officials have been directed to expedite loan approvals, release sanctioned loans without delay, activate inactive vendors, empanel new vendors where required, and eliminate unnecessary rejections of applications.
The state has also witnessed a remarkable increase in installation speed. Daily rooftop solar installations have risen from around 500 per day in June 2025 to nearly 2,100 per day by May 2026. Notably, the latest 50,000 installations were completed in just 22 days, making it the fastest installation pace recorded in the country.
The scheme has already added more than 2,000 MW of rooftop solar capacity in Uttar Pradesh, significantly strengthening the state’s clean energy infrastructure.
Beyond renewable energy generation, the programme is also delivering economic benefits. The rooftop solar ecosystem is generating an estimated ₹40–50 crore worth of business every day and has created employment opportunities for more than 80,000 people across manufacturing, installation, maintenance and related services.
Officials have also been asked to compile and publicise data on electricity bill savings achieved by beneficiaries to encourage more households to adopt rooftop solar systems.
Experts attribute Uttar Pradesh’s rapid progress to strong policy support, effective implementation, increasing public participation and an expanding network of vendors. The PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana aims to provide affordable and clean electricity to households while reducing electricity bills and accelerating India’s transition towards renewable energy.
