MP Dr. Mannalal Rawat met Anurag ThakurMP Dr. Mannalal Rawat met Anurag Thakur

New Delhi : Udaipur MP Dr. Mannalal Rawat met Anurag Thakur, Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Coal, Mines, and Steel, in New Delhi to discuss the rising pollution in the Jawar Mines area and the severe issues faced by local residents due to a lack of CSR activities. He urged Thakur to take concrete steps to control pollution from mining and to direct mining companies to actively engage in the development of the region and the welfare of local residents through CSR initiatives. Dr. Rawat emphasized that resolving these issues would enhance the quality of life for residents and help maintain environmental balance.

He highlighted that mining waste has accumulated over 38 hectares, causing liquid waste seepage that obstructs natural streams, negatively impacting local crops and contaminating drinking water sources. The spread of sludge has also trapped and killed livestock, while local vegetation suffers due to a lack of afforestation programs, leading to an increase in invasive species that harm the environment. Immediate action is required from relevant authorities to protect the local environment and residents’ lives.

Additionally, overloading of vehicles has damaged roads in TD Jawar Mines, causing significant transportation issues. The deteriorating road conditions affect not only daily commuting but also emergency services, prompting a call for authorities to take this matter seriously and repair the roads.

Hindustan Zinc had previously signed an agreement with nine local gram panchayats promising priority employment for local residents. However, this commitment has been entirely ignored. In the Jawar football academy, local tribal players are neither prioritized nor provided housing, despite the area being designated for scheduled tribes. This situation adversely affects the development and socio-economic status of the local community, and immediate action from authorities is expected to ensure that local players receive their rights.

According to the complaint from the local MP, Hindustan Zinc is not adhering to the terms of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) commitments. The specific areas of concern include:

1. Support for Local Communities:

   – Employment Opportunities: The company is expected to provide job and business opportunities to local residents, ensuring they receive priority in hiring.

   – Skill Development Programs: Implementation of training and skill development initiatives is crucial for enabling locals to engage in various sectors.

2. Health and Education:

   – Health Services: Hindustan Zinc should organize health camps, offer medical facilities, and run sanitation programs, particularly focusing on maternal and child health.

   – Support for Education: The company needs to enhance resources and infrastructure in local schools while providing scholarships and other educational support.

3. Environmental Protection:

   – Tree Plantation Programs: The company should conduct tree planting in areas impacted by mining operations and ensure the protection of natural resources.

   – Water Management: Establishing programs for water conservation and improving water quality is essential, along with monitoring and safeguarding local water sources.

4. Infrastructure Development:

   – Roads and Transportation: Investment in building roads and transportation facilities in local areas is necessary to facilitate accessibility.

   – Construction of Institutions: Infrastructure such as schools, health centers, and community centers should be created to support local development.

5. Sensitivity and Commitment:

   – Respect for Local Culture: Hindustan Zinc should honor local culture and traditions while understanding the sentiments of community members.

   – Community Participation: Involving local communities in decision-making processes and developing plans based on their needs is vital.

6. Monitoring and Transparency:

   – Impact Assessment: Regular evaluations of the social and environmental impacts of mining activities should be conducted, with corrective measures taken as needed.

   – Transparency: The company must ensure transparency in its CSR activities to provide information and build trust within local communities.

These commitments are crucial for the hindustan zinq to fulfill its social responsibilities and contribute positively to the communities affected by its mining operations.

“Hunger for Run”

Vedanta’s “Hunger for Run” initiative might be viewed more as a public relations effort than a sincere attempt to tackle the root causes of hunger and nutrition. While initiatives like this can help raise awareness and engage the community, it’s essential to redirect attention towards meaningful actions, especially concerning corporate operations in the Javar Mines region. Instead of focusing solely on campaigns like “Hunger for Run,” the emphasis should be on confronting the urgent challenges faced by local communities in Javar Mines. By concentrating on community well-being, environmental sustainability, and transparent practices, Vedanta has the potential to create a significant impact that extends beyond mere public relations.

Urgent Action Needed for CSR Compliance by Hindustan Zinc

Hindustan Zinc must urgently adhere to its Corporate Social Responsibility commitments to address the pressing concerns of local communities affected by its mining operations. By prioritizing employment opportunities, enhancing health and education services, implementing environmental protection measures, and investing in infrastructure, the company can significantly improve the quality of life for residents. Furthermore, fostering community participation and ensuring transparency will build trust and strengthen relationships with local stakeholders. Initiatives like Vedanta’s “Hunger for Run” should not overshadow the need for meaningful actions that directly address the urgent challenges faced by the communities in the Javar Mines region.
