New Delhi, Jan 11 : BJP leader Smriti Irani addressed the launch event of the “Her Skill, Her Future: Empowering 100,000 Widows” initiative, a collaborative effort with contributions from the Loomba Foundation aimed at equipping widows with essential skills and resources to build sustainable livelihoods.
During her speech, Irani underscored the strength and resilience of women, emphasizing that they are not defined by circumstances or challenges but possess the ability to overcome adversity.
Highlighting key global observances like the International Day of Non-Violence, the International Day of Yoga, and the International Day of Widows, Irani acknowledged Lord Loomba’s pivotal role in establishing the day dedicated to widows’ recognition and empowerment.
“These observances celebrate human potential, justice, and non-violence,” Irani noted. “A woman is never merely a victim of circumstances or her own challenges—she is capable of rising above them.”
As Vice President of The Loomba Foundation, Irani expressed pride in working alongside its President, Cherie Blair, to advance the cause of widows’ empowerment and foster economic and social equity.
Founded in 1997, The Loomba Foundation is internationally recognized for advocating for widows’ rights and combating the societal discrimination they face. To date, the organization has supported over 20,000 widows across countries such as India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal, Syria, and several African and South American nations.
In 2016, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated a project under the foundation’s initiative to empower 5,000 widows in his Varanasi constituency. The latest initiative aims to further expand support for widows, reinforcing the commitment to their dignity, independence, and well-being.
