Ek Muthi Chawal

New Delhi : SMFG India Credit Co. Ltd. (SMICC) has launched the fifth edition of its charitable initiative, Ek Muthi Chawal (A Fistful of Rice), aimed at combating hunger among children and the elderly. This program engages over 12,000 employees across 21 states, encouraging them to donate essential food items such as rice, wheat, and pulses to support vulnerable communities, particularly children and seniors in care homes. This year, SMICC has set a target to distribute 60,000 kilograms of food, which is anticipated to provide monthly nutrition to around 20,000 children and elderly individuals throughout India.

Since its inception, Ek Muthi Chawal has significantly expanded in both scale and impact, increasing its outreach each year. In the previous four editions, SMICC employees collectively donated enough food to ensure monthly nutrition for over 50,000 children. Employee participation has grown from 5,000 at the outset to over 10,500 in recent years. The success of this fifth edition underscores SMICC’s commitment to social responsibility.

Swaminathan Subramanian, Chief Operating Officer of SMFG India Credit, emphasized the initiative’s mission, stating, “Ek Muthi Chawal reflects our dedication to community welfare and social value creation. Small actions can lead to significant change, and through this initiative, our employees bring festive cheer and make a real difference in lives across the country.”

The impact of Ek Muthi Chawal also extends internationally, supported by SMFG, the parent company of SMICC. SMFG employees contribute to the initiative through their “Shaka Kaichi Day” celebration by donating rice to enhance the program’s reach. SMFG’s involvement demonstrates a shared commitment to addressing social challenges in India and beyond.

Founded in India in 2007, SMFG India Credit Co. Ltd. (formerly Fullerton India Credit Co. Ltd.) has established a strong presence in underserved communities, providing financing solutions to retail and small business customers across 670 towns and 70,000 villages. With over 1,000 branches and a workforce exceeding 25,000, the company actively seeks opportunities to give back to these communities. Through this year’s initiative, SMICC aims to cultivate community spirit and shared purpose among employees and partners while addressing fundamental nutritional needs. As SMICC pursues ambitious goals, Ek Muthi Chawal exemplifies how corporations can harness employee involvement to create a meaningful social impact.
